Driving Hot VWs for 44 Years Strong!

« on: July 16, 2012, 05:43:15 am »

Hard to believe it has been 35 years since Anne and I built this car as newly weds.  The year was 1977. Had all the traditional trimmings of a Cal Looker. The 1700cc motor had an Engle 120 cam, a BRS 383 centrifugal distributor (that now resides in Frenchy DeHouix's split window), dual webers, a unique dash with OPEL GT VDO guages in a crazy plaid padded dash, real EMPI 5 Spokes, close ratio trans built by Don Ward (Der Wagon Shop - Orangevale, California), and a host of other goodies. This was a true driver. Drove to Bug-In 22 from northern Cal.

One of the shots was taken on a visit to Point Dume, Malibu, where my wife's grandmother lived on the cliffs above ZUMA BEACH. What great car. A testament to the old machine 88 piston/barrels and small motor combos.  I'd drive this car anywhere.

John...when my wife sees these shots...she keeps reminding me that I had no body fat...opposed to my current reality! LOL  The metabolism does not slow down with age...our activity does.  I am trying to win back that boyish figure...but not as skinny as these pictures.  :-)

I don't think I'd want to be that skinny again.  I've tried to have less fat and the general "old guy" look and have found it is pretty much a loosing battle.  You can improve but must stay at it continually.  I'm not up for that one.  Please pass the BUTTER  !!   Wink Wink
