What is the story on these, thought these were after market to boost oil pressure, now I hear VW put them in on Type III? Can somebody shine some light on these??

The only time I ever saw these was when Rapid Cool offered them with their external coolers and they also sold them separately.  As I recall they came in a (2) pack for dual relief cases.

Don't know the full story behind them (though I'm sure someone does), but the Bentley manual shows a notched piston I believe in the '70-79 (orange) book.

I have never seen these in any VW factory original Beetle engine that I've disassembled. I believe they were installed in the Type 3 engines...
