That is a great car you've got there. Pretty much everyones dream project car in terms of condition. So nice that it makes the work easy, and so nice that it makes the decisions difficult for custom guys like ourselves. With that car, my idea of fun would be to go through the motions like they did "back in the day". Even if it takes years. Start out pre-cal with stock height, chromies, and a few bolt ons to the 40hp. Next, drop the front and get some proper rolling stock. Ad some more horsepower... Then do a shave and an exterior only repaint in the stock colour. Big IDA motor to back it up. Then dash and interior mods. It will always be evolving, you'll never get bored with it. It's rare to find a car in that condition these days, but they made a million or so 65's, it's not like yours is the last stock example on earth. So have fun with it, whatever that means to you.
VERY VERY well put Zach That is pretty much what I have decided to do, As I have mentioned before its far from "Perfect" and I have mentioed the small patch of rust on the right front A pillar (see pic) so its not like its a "concours survivor" So I am not too worried about "Cuttin it up" and dechroming it etc etc and I have some really really cool ideas for the "evolution" of this little Cal Looker I already have a pair of Goodyear BlueStreaks and some chrome 356 wheels (4.5" & 5.5") A nos Bosch Blue Coil, A nos Weber 40dcn14 Carb, an old DDS Ram type manifold, and a "low hour" 1200/40hp shortblock for the 1385 "BigBore motor".......... So let the Cal Look Story begin

thought I'd bump this post (pic's to follow) I've pulled the motor over the winter as it was alittle low on compression on 1 & 3 so I pulled the heads off and it turned out to be the valve seats They looked horrible but after a few hours carefull "lappin" they were good to go again, This is where I made the mistake of reading Mr Summe's Performance Handbook where it says something like "if you do nothing else... remove the sharp radius in the exhaust ports"So....... I did... and I am pretty proud of my first "head Job" I didn't go to crazy just lots of carefull smoothin & blending..... I even reworked the inlet alittle just to help make use of my newly modified manifold..... I basiclly cut off the original top flange and grafted on some extra material & a flange for a 34pict-3 carb (which I am fitting with 6v parts and a velocity stack ) I then "ported"/"blended" the new flange into the original manifold I have also made up a set of equal length headers with some metal "fresh air" pipes for the heatexchangers and I have a lovely WHITE glasspack mufler I also found a NoS 6v Bosch Blue coil (still in its sunbleached box! ) and I've ordered a 010 from Glen oh and I got some YELLOW HT leads I even painted my Rocker covers Racing RED and my Drums YELLOW...... This will look cool with the CHROME 4.5 and 5.5 Porsche 356 wheels I picked up a while ago

Well she's back up and running and....... I am pretty happy I got the motor fired up the other day with my "New" Solex 34pict-3 and after a little fiddling & fine tunning the motor idled perfectly and it sounds AMAZING And after I got some 155's & 165's fitted to my chrome 356 wheels I took it for the first "Test drive" I was dying to see what my "Head work" would drive like And I can report I am pretty proud of myself It drives SOOOOOOO well! its not like I have loads more power just LOADS more torque and more rev's (but the power pulley helps too) The best way to describe it is... Its like driving a later 1600cc motor but its more "peepy" and revvy The exhaust note is just right too..... Nice and Raspy but with a deep tone, its nice around town but does get pretty loud when you Boot it There is also a nice bit of induction "roar" from the velocity stack Here is the spec's: - Stock 1200/40hp longblock - Ported Stock head (by me!) - Bosch W8AC Plugs - Yellow HT leads - Modified/ported Original 1200 manifold - Solex 34pict-3 with Velocity Stack - Santana Power pulley (356 size) - Bosch "Blue" coil 6v (NoS GERMAN) - Bosch 009 & electronic ignition kit (010 coming soon) - Equal Length header & single Glass Pack muffler (WHITE) - POLISHED Regulator & oil filler cap Pictures to follow soon I promise

maybe not an accurate comparison, but fabs 1300 speedwell engine runs like a 1600 as well, just more torque and actually more fun. condensed power in a way.

Ok maybe a 1600 is a bit more powerfull BUT the new torque I have is RIDICULAS! 30-105kph in 3rd It sounds really good too, Nice and raspy with a nice deep note under load, I really need to change the 009 though, I am just waiting to afford an 010 from Glenn Just an oil change and adjust the clearences and she's ready for ebi - Pictures to follow SOON

Ok.... Here is the message I sent out:
Right ok... I am messaging because I want to sell my 65 beetle as I can not afford to bring it back to the UK etc... Most of you know the car and I am sure you can find more picture on here.... I am selling it "as is" no eu control but an easy fix... A rolling project, it comes with an OG 1600single port and a NoS panel to weld into the passenger footwell.. A set of OG solid wide5 wheels/tires... An amazing car with cool sign writing by Morten....
I am thinking 15,000 as is or an extra 2000 for the OG 356 4.5 & a pair of repro 5.5's... No bumpers sorry..

By the way these prices are in Norwegian Krone..... hahahaha Anyway I have been talking with another member in Belgium about maybe delivering the car for around 23,000-24,000ish so I guess a little more for the extra mileage/ferry etc..... Thats approx £2000 (UK) Make its £2500 uk pounds and its yours.....
