Grin Aircooled VW-rallyserie continues!!! 19.1.2013 will start VW-rallyserie again in Finland. We will start with three winterrallies, then we will continue this serie on summer with two rallies more. Also all these cars can be seen in other historicrallies too during the season.
We have counted now 24 raceready aircooled rally VW:s near here in Finland. Let see how many cars we can get on the first rally...

There will be shown again many models:

1500 beetle
1302 S beetle
1303 S beetle
1500 S notchback
1600 L notschback
Ghia Coupe

Some drivers are old/fast and been on rallyraces for ages, some are new and firstbeginners also. Interesting to see how tight the serie will be. After we have had now two years of this serie, only one car/driver has been on the top3 of serie two times, all other positions are changing all the time, which makes this serie more interesting.

Some info and photos at www.golf17rally.com  > there aircooled

Sweet!

I've had "rally continues 2012" thread bookmarked for a long time, was hoping there would be a 2013. This is what brought me to the Cal-Look Lounge. Our last TSD rally in B.C. (Canada) is in a couple of weeks, alas I'm on the organizing committee and thus won't be running the event. Historic rally here doesn't really exist on a stage-level.

Can't wait for the reports and photos from your events.

Fine! Our most winning example of historic rally-VW:s will be shown at Helsinki motor show with one old 1302 racer which is now total reatored also. Both in our department in that show. Picts will come soon!

There is also possibility for foreigners to join this Finnish rallyserie. Just pay 35,-eur to join our motorclub + pay insurance for one season 90,-eur + come here and take part in round 5 hours lesson for rally, then just take you car and come on race. And if you dont have your own car, you can rent our 1302 S rallybeetle. Just simple as it is...

Snow is here! We got yesterday allmost 20cm fresh snow and minus 7. At once in the evening we took rallybeetle out of garage and went testing right away! And because the rallycars are on on normal traficplates + insurances, we can drive those cars daily also...
Next thing is to change the new race-engine +dogring gearbox, then we can see how the snow will fly on this winter.

For the first rally in 2013 we are going to have at least 11 aircooled VW:s on startline! And maybe is more to come, because some new cars are about to be ready soon also. Today we had the first real rallytesting, there was enough snow and minus 18 only...
The 1302 worked very good and rallylights were ok, so next we will put more power + better gbox and some adjusting for suspension.

Let see when the threes will come closer...

1. Erkki Eerola             beetle 1302 S -71 orange
2. Juhani Laaksonen     beetle 1302 S -71 orange
3. Robert Bärlund        beetle 1303 S -73 metsilver
4. Stefan Wiik             beetle 1303 S -73 lightblue
5. Kimmo Raitanen       beetle 1302 S -71 red
6. Juhani Jyränkö         beetle 1302 S -71 metblue
7. Mika Hannu             type 3 1600 L -68 darkblue

11. Timo Varis            type 3 1500 S -65 black
12. Markku Mäkinen    type 3 1500 S -65 white

Some cars have changed owners, some are rebuilt and some strongly uppdated for this season. Let see who will take the first place this time. Remember that  in serie  there is a special pointsystem, that gives older/slower cars  extrapoints to keep the interest high.
First race is important, but we have 5 races this season and 4 will be counted on the seriepoints of 3 winterraces + 2 summerraces.

Next saturday round 9 pm results are clear...

Interesting to see what happens, weather forecast in round 15-20 minus c... The roads will be hard and in fast conditon.

Our tests are driven and my car seems to be faster than ever before, but nobody knows if it will hold on the road...

Enduro motorcycle World Champion Juha Salminen will join this rally also with BMW M3, let see if he can keep the car on the road too.

First rally is driven. Weather was only minus 34 on saturday morning... First car type 3 blowed its extra olicooler when started the engine... We did pipe to pass it to get the car on race. All 12 cars started the race. There was total 232 cars. Many had problems in the morning on starting and after driven on trailers some houdreds of kilometers to raceplace.

First real stop came to Eerolas beetle, which broke the engine before specialstage 1 start. We were the next unlucky; i felt the car was not running so good as normal and after driven some kilometres we turned close the edge of the road by 3rd on and suddenly the frontwheel dropped off the  drivingline and car went uppside down and luckily turned  back on wheels at once. So we started again and continued driving. I had to stop soon and do some platework on fenders by hands to get the wheels go round free. Then we continued driving but the car was not working good it went like on-off.  On specialstage 3 i stopped our race and i drive on parkplace to wait for drawingcar. Luckily we had new WEBASTO-gasolineheater in my car so we just sit there and waited for help.

Laaksonen was fastest on all stages, he also drove out of road but managed to get back easy. Wiik was not so lucky, he drove out on same place and must wait for help to continue. Liukkonen drove also out and lost his extralights but continued to dark with only std lights on. Bärlund thought he had problem with gearbox and stopped, but today we found that his crankaxle was cutted off.

All others get to the finishflag. The roads were hard and fast and weather was on afternoon only like minus 20. So hard race for all cars. Now it is time to find the problem and repair cars fast, because next race will be after 2 weeks. This evening there has signed in 10 VW:s on next race too. Serie is interesting and sure not easy for anybody.

For the first time ever we had foreign mechanics here to help us when Steve and his team from Belgium was here.  Germany-guys here were reporters so for sure you will see soon some more of Finnish VW-rally on international magazines too.

Results of this first Kuplapaja VW-rally:

1.Laaksonen 1302 S
2.Raitanen 1302 S
3.Liukkonen 1302 S
4.Kannosto Karmann Ghia
5.Juutilainen 1302 S
6. Wiik 1303 S
7. Hannu 1600 L T3
8. Mäkinen 1500 S T3
9. Varis 1500 S  T3

2nd Kuplapaja VW-rally 2013 will be on 2.february in Hamina, only under 2 hours driving from Helsinki. We have 11 aircooled VW:s signed in this race! There will some other cars also than in the first race, so interesting to see the top5 cars this time. The roads are not going to be easy, because the race will start later and then it is dark. Good extralamps are needed for every car.
Let see how it goes this this time, we have uppdated egine + rebuilt plateparts...Important is to finish this race, because 4 of  5 races are counted on seriepoints and from that first race we have 0 points.
Last test will be on wednesday evening with lights, then we will see if we have found something new/better again...

2nd VW-rally is driven last saturday. Weather was very nice, lot of snow + only minus 4 degrees c.  Our race allmost stopped before it really started: engine stopped after checkingcontrol on the road... Luckily it started again after a while, it was like turned off.
We drove to the first specialstage like no working ignition and lucky we had extra coil bolted on fanhouse, so i just switched wires on another coil and we were back on the race! Roads were smaller this time and needed driving with open eyes. Race was interesting and top 5 changed many times before the last stage.
We must remember that there is NO NOTES, so all races are driven as "blind"=just go and drive what you can see.  This time we wanted to drive on the wheels(last time on roof also) so i did not take any risks and finished race as total 3rd.

Results:

1. Juhani Laaksonen 1302
2. Robert Bärlund 1303
3. Juhani Jyränkö 1302
4. Kimmo Raitanen 1302
5. Stefan Wiik 1303
6. Mika Hannu 1600 L
7. Timo Varis 1500 S

+one 1303 stopped because of broken alternator and 2 x 1302 did not come to the startline.
For the next race 9.march we are going to have 15 VW:s at startline!

uppdated info + photos at www.golf17rally.com

I think now we have finally solved all the ignition problems and we can consentrate on driving and increase the agressive driving...
Let see what will happen next. This metallicblue 1302 beetle is 4sale as race-ready 6500,- -7200,-eur depending on the following parts. Photo at lounge on for sale: historic rallycars

Next rally 9. march will be  the last with this metlightblue 1302 S for me. The car is allready sold and will be delivered to next owner soon after that race to Sweden! There is allready near 5 rallybeetles in Sweden and the interest is increasing fast. Let see if we can develope something international with these aircooled rally VW:s...
I have now tested this old 1302 enough and will do a new car to continue in this rallyserie.
Also other new aircooled VW:s  are coming into this rallyserie and it will be very interesting to see how the cars and drivers are getting faster...

Winterseason of the Finnish VW-rallyseries is now over. Last race was yesterday, weather was supernice, shiny and only minus 10.
Roads were very fine and icy in the middle of Finland. 12 VW:s started on the race. Our class was the first so we had the best place to start the race. There were 4 specilastages between 6 and 23 km each. First 2 stages + servicepaus, then 2 stages more.

This time the speed of these cars were increased again! Top places changed and thats allways very intresting and keeps the interest on in this racing. We saw also a latemodel of type 3 notchback back on racing.
11 cars survived the race, only Juutilainen stopped the race when the hockeysick stopped between the forks in gbox. Bärlund lost time when he lost one wheel, but the audience in the woods helped him back on the road and they found the lost wheel...It was very nice to see when also the oldtimer rallydriver Eerola came back racing and showed the "boys" how the real racing goes...

Our car was running ok, but unlucky we started after a much slower t3 and we drove after them long time by loosing time and that dropped us from total 3 to 6th position... Now i will say goodbye to this beetle and will bolt-on it back on oldstyle racecondition and the car will continue racing in Sweden where a huge interest into VW-rallyserie is coming up now!

Now after this 2013 winterseason we can say that aircooled VW:s has developed a lot and proud we can compare the racetimes with all other historicrallycars. This time -again, there was only 1 car faster in whole race than Laaksonens 1302 beetle...
and oldtimer Eerola lost only a few seconds to Laaksonen.

Results:

1Laaksonen 1302
2Eerola 1302
3Raitanen 1302
4Kannosto Ghia coupe
5Wiik 1303
6Jyränkö 1302
7Korpela 1303
8Hannu type 3
9Varis type 3
10Mäkinen type3
11Bärlund 1303

There is also a report of our winterrally in German rally magazine and soon in other magazines too.
