Man ...I had about 16 tickets for "frontend being to low" (Less than 24inch's) and no "front plate".....More than half were from Whittier P.D....!...Oh and 1 modified exhaust cleared by "certified muffler station" ..a.k.a. Midas Muffler from Seal Beach P.D. who already had a bus pulled over ..!! ..He jumped out in the street to stop me ..! Yes, sir... you sound like you lived through the same era as many of us did on Whittier Blvd. Downey was another town that despised modified cars. Thankfully, I grew up with a few cop families so getting the tickets taken care of was extremely easy. To this day, I still wait for them to pull me over for something. Now, it seems that they're after the those useless riceboy cars (lowered Hondas, Acuras, etc.)
Thank God.

Thank God. Yep, I hear you guys... Front end too low... no front license plate... insufficient or no bumpers... modified exhaust... Pulling over a Cal-Look car in the old days for a fix-it ticket was like shooting fish in a barrel. Whittier Blvd. and Bellflower Blvd. were the worst for me. Well except for the city of Lakewood... oh yeah Long Beach and Signal Hill were pretty bad too. I almost forgot the beach cities... Huntington and Seal Beach were tough. Had an officer pull me over in Seal Beach one time... said I looked "suspect". He made me pull the seats out of my car, he went through EVERYTHING! He even broke open an 8 track tape that had a rattle in it! It was loose inside! He wrote me for most of the violations listed above and let me go. Believe me, I was no criminal, and to this day I respect law enforcement but it was different back then... I feel VW's were really a Cop magnet.

Also Got a ticket for Parking to far from the curb( 19 Inch's ..limit was 18..!)..At AutoHaus in Buena Park...! The cop came inside the store and asked who owned the Light Blue bug in front which was me..! and I remember someone behind the counter telling the cop some "shit" for doing that... !!!

Nice. How about this one: Ticket for driving through a parking lot... without parking. Got that one just off Bellflower Blvd around '75 or so. I tried to fight it and lost. Officer Solly was the local boulevard cop who made life tough for us cruisers.

Officer Solly was the local boulevard cop who made life tough for us cruisers. Oh, yeah... we tried to get Bellflower fired up again and passed out fliers around '84 or so. Nope. The cops were so on us with those very same tickets. If you didn't pull in somewhere to park... BAM, ticket. You're right, Dave, I never had a problem with Lakewood Sheriffs. Them and Fullerton P.D. were actually the two coolest law enforcements. I'd get pulled over so they could as me how I got the stance and/or or to look at my interior and engine. Guys from both departments were building their own Cal Look VWs, so I was honored during those times I was getting pulled over. HAHA!!
Our motto, back then, was... if you're not getting hassled for your Cal Look car, you're not doing it right.

WTF is the scoop on the Ghia for??
From http://www.bigwigracecars.com/crowghia.html: "...the tunnel that runs from a plenum area under the hood scoop back to the carburetor "air box." I tried to make it look somewhat like a center console. You can also see the vertical gate shifter and the hydraulic hand brake in this picture, as well as part of the funny car style cage that surrounds the driver" "This is the back area of the interior where the tunnel dissappears underneath the other panels. It branches into three flexible tubes to go around the transmission and dump the air into the carb area. Removing the one large center panel allows access to the front of the transmission and the front ladder bar mounting points."

I know where Nannook is setting in a garage -- not far from me There a few of them, but the "real" Nanook that still races the nostalgia circuit is owned by the Hough family who are from Las Vegas. Marc

Can somebody tell me if it's a VW color on the bug in the centre of the picture? Looks close to the upper bug. Really cool color!
