KS, I like the flipped Anglia/Pop front end on the roadster. Wonder what the caster is on that setup?

While doing a little house cleaning yesterday, Sharon came across a 1971 copy of West magazine from the LA Times. Inside is a very cool
story by Joel Siegel titled "Once upon a time there was a bug, a plain little bug..." Joel writes of Big Daddy Ed Roth's love of the bug as well
as Larry Shaw, a 23 year old mechanic at Cotton-Goff VW, who put $1,200 into his own '57 Beetle. The $1,200 bought him: a 1600cc 85hp
engine, 1970 VW seats, flared fenders, wide-track tires, a stinger, fiberglass air scoops on the hood and on the sides, and a few gallons of royal
blue lacquer. Minus the monies spent on seats and paint, the $1,200 was spent to make his car run better. FASTER. And handle surer.
Also, a few pictures of cars from the time are included... treasure to the tenth power!

Very cool Sarge!
My Brother got me in to VW's around 1970 with his '65. Car had fiberglass flares all around, ham-can hood, scoop decklid, nerf bars, Cyclone purple "glass pack", U.S. mags, etc, etc,...
I'm sure you remember that era was the start of the Mini Truck craze too.. Good times for sure!
Extra points for the "Deal" artwork on the cover..

Thanks Dave! I remember those times pretty well. The best part of Joel's article is when he chats up Ed Roth about his fondness for VW's. Big Daddy was
a good customer at the Auto Haus warehouse back then and I feel fortunate to have made his acquaintance. Joel writes...
Volkswagens?!
Volkswagens.
"It's the best car made," according to Roth. And he does, after all, know more then a little about automobiles. He's been taking them apart and putting
them back together for 20 years.
Roth draws the parallel between the car kid today and the '50's who customized '37 Fords and '49 Mercs: "This is a kid who can't sit still. He's gotta know
what's behind the sheet metal. What's underneath the car. What makes it run. What makes it tick. Why does
this
car have soul."
Sounds familiar
Here's a couple more pics of the accompanying pics (I don't want to tear up the mag to scan). Dig the George Barris Kalifornia Bugvan!

I have a copy of that issue somewhere. Can't beat the Dave Deal artwork on the cover.

this makes me think of a pic i remember from way back in 1972 when i went to school in Buffalo. i had some kind of magazine about cars that had an advertisement with a drawing of a bug that had the interior completely filled with a V8 with the supercharger stick out on top. it read: "how did mpc ever get those great big engines into those little cars?" anyone remember this?

Owned and driven by two brothers from the South of France, her name is "Petit Pimousse" in reference to a little candy
Obviously, the engine is a flat 4, 1835cc but not sure...
If you have facebook you can watch this video from the DDD12, a great run against the Windsplit

Ryan ! lets see some pictures of your car . I was telling somebody on here the other day about your car and how you can swap it from a baja to a gasser in next to no time .
Rob
Ahhh that was the plan originally, to have a quick release system using dzeus fasteners but in the end I just sold the baja kit and wheels and went for the "gasser" all out. I just didn't have the space at the time for all the wheels and panels, but now I do as I got some extra workshop space.
That picture was taken on the way to the trip out. My bros gasser didn't make it in the end, despite us changing the wheel bearings out. Bit of a shame but next year we will make it with both cars. I saw (and heard) you razzing round there in your plymouth!!

Hey old man, who ever removes the shift rod? In over 40 years, I don't think I've ever done it except when building a race car!
