Agave Green '67 Cal Looker

Well what am I about to get myself into?? After deliberating for ages I decided to take on this project.  I needed something to do between hitches as the days of playing and coaching rugby are long gone. So the car is a '67 California import, brought into the country via the Russel @ The VW Gasser Garage. The plans are to create a Cal Looker, current thinking is Sea Blue, on Flat Four Enkei 5 spokes, CSP front discs, a pile of other things, maybe a red interior (not sure on that yet).

So yesterday I headed up to Old Meldrum, truck filled with engine bits to hand over to Richie to get that built up....been working on that for a while now and will be good to see that come to fruition. Money was handed over and I left with the '67 a NOS replacement parcel shelf and the nervous feeling that I may have gone in over my head here

So a short trip home, with John driving the '67 down in the back of his egg on the windiest day for a while, we eventually got home and unloaded it.



Power cuts due to the wind stopped me firing straight in, as I had to try and sort out the house alarm, which had decided to have a mind of it's own during the power cuts and Sarah was about to go mental.

However by 9pm the following had happened.













Tar Boards removed from engine bay, car came with engine out.




End of the night





So far I'm pleasantly pleased, wing bolts have come out easily, as I've knocked off the underseal factory fresh metal is uncovered. When I removed the running boards the metal behind was fresh and still with the factory applied paint. Work i know it needs, is replace the rear parcel shelf, sort out the surface rust, straighten the wings, fill in the speaker holes in the boot....and other stuff I haven't yet found. The plan now is to strip it down and send it to the blasters.

Well my post work insomnia hit, so instead of lying in bed I headed to the garage before a trip away with the missus.
So speedo, fuel tank, glove box, rear arches and windows removed, that's going to be it for about 5-6 days, enforced break for pub and restaurant time

Yep got it, very pleased, bottom 6" doesn't resemble a teabag held together with filler.

Been looking at that thread and saving pics, I believe arty types would call it a "Mood folder" i have it saved as car porn.

I concur with that Kev, one talk and i'm now the owner of a 67......how did that happen?

Right then, I've been a bit lax over the last couple of days, a trip away followed by a stomach bug have slowed me down.

However today I headed into the garage and carried on stripping down, the interior came out, the joyous task of removing all the rock hard seals, and finding that an old skate board can be used to mend the battery area.

Anyway time for the pics.




found this relay under the rear seat. Stupid question but is this standard in a '67 as i don't have one in my '71, appears to be linked to the ignition....maybe 



Floor looking a bit holey, new Wolfsburg West heavy duty panels are going to replace the current floors.

Right then after proving once again that i shouldn't mix drinks I foolishly decided to split the body from the pan.....a stupid idea, and I'm now fighting the urge to throw up.  :no:

So here are the pics saves me typing any more. Tomorrow I'll lower it down and give the garage a clean.

It's going to be blasted at a place in Linlithgow.

First try and get groovy with the kids and get some "scene" points with it's slammed stance.

Looks like a decent startling point, better than most uk cars. If a pair of pan halves is the worst of it, you've got away lightly!
On an unrelated note, are you close to Linlithgow then? I know the place reasonably well, my aunt lives there.

Well the pan halves and the rear parcel area seem to be the areas that require repair and a few other bits and pieces.

I live up near Dundee, was recommended that place by a fella whose into his Mk2 escort restorations.

Thanks Kev, got a NOS panel as part of the deal. Just waiting on couriers and blasting slots now.....Time for a well earned week off before heading back to work

A quick update. Whilst I headed back to work for a month, i had made plans for the bugs resto to continue. So the floor pans are now being changed for Wolfsburg West Heavy duty panels. Next in line are the rear body supports and the fuel line to be replaced, whole lot blasted. A new beam will then be fitted, the pan built up so it can roll, and the whole lot sent up to the lovely guys at DTH, so it can be reunited with it's body .....when it's finished at the blasters.




The clutch arm seems to have taken to stick over the years so that will be repaired.

Well things are progressing, I'm busily buying bits and pieces, hopefully next week the pan will be back with me.

Well I may as well keep updating this as a log of my work.....or at the moment other peoples work. I swear I'll be on the spanners soon.  

Currently the floor pan halves have been replaced as shown in previous posts, a new stainless steel fuel line has been put in and a 2" Titan engineering narrowed beam fitted. Hopefully DTH should have it in a couple of weeks, to be reunited with the body

Hi Kev

The body is "coming along" the guy does stainless steel blasting for food companies, and with some of them starting their summer shut downs he's been snowed under, so mine has been pushed back a bit.

Hopefully will be done in the next 2 weeks, and should be primed.

That was down at Limebug. Convinced them not to powdercoat, so all protection will be put on it when it comes up to DTH

Time for another little update, almost feel like a fraud as everyone else is doing the work and I'm just doing the project managing bit. The pan is coming along, and hopefully should be up north in the next few weeks. The body has now been blasted as today was delivered to DTH for the next phase of work. I'll let the pics do the talking:

Project is come'n together nicely !! Do your self a favor and dig all the foam in the bottom of the C pillars, Its what trapped moisture in. And if you do not, You will never stop the blasting material from working loose and dropping down in the carb area's.

Those nasty little pillows . . . take a drive on a cool night and let them warm up, then they will actually cause condensation to form on that tender, un-painted sheet metal inside your C-pillars . . . little buggers!
