Hi Loungers!
I need some advice please on scavenging oil from my turbo. The turbo sit too low to gravity feed back into the sump and it was designed to run with a remote oil pump used on race gearboxes.
Oil used to run into a purpose built sump below the turbo and the remote pump pulled it back into the case.
Now I'm going for a larger turbo and i was hoping to go with a dry sump set up.
Can i scavenge oil via the 2 stage pump from the oil return of the turbo?
Is there any work needed with the oil pick up in the engine case before i attach the pump?
With the 2 stage system, does it have 2 out lets and 2 returns for the system to help pull and push oil?

Your advice will be gratefully appreciated.

normally a 2 stage pump has a scavenge side (from the sump) and a pressure side from the tank. some scavenge using the factory pickup like CB, peiper thornston. and some scavenge from an external pick up like autocraft. I would not plumb the turbo scavenge into the sump scavenge. It would need its own stage ie a 3 stage pump. What I can't tell you is how well this works. there are also electric scavenge pumps for this purpose which you could run to the dry sump tank. eg:

I have not seen your setup so this is probably a stupid suggestion but why not rotate the center cartrige so that you gain a better angle for your oil return from the turbo ?  I know everyone likes their oil line on top and the return pointing straight down but I cannot see where having it at a 45 degree or more angle would change anything as far as drainback is concerned , it might give you enough of an angle to drain it back into your crankcase. Hi Mike,

the angle is given by the turbo manufactor.
If its not straight it can cause different oil pressures on the turbo bearings.
Which can causes less lifetime and oilsmoke as well.

 I am not an engineer or even very smart for that matter but the oil delivery line is pressure fed so it should feed the bearing evenly , the gravity return line if big enough should not develope any pressure which causes the smoke ( oil leaking past the seals into intake system ) , correct ?  I have never tried it is why I am asking. yes...but the oil input of the turbo has (on Garrett Turbos) a very small hole
to get the flow down.... Wink

My engine was designed with the Tilton diff oil scavange pump. The system you've shown me looks far better an alternative than what I'm running.
I think i need to make contact with rb racing and ask them for more info.

I have a Autocraft 2.5 stg pump for this set up. The 1/2 stage scavenged the turbo and returns it to the tank or sump if necessary. I have a brand new one if you are interested.
