I only know of one other 1 piece EMPI fiberglass body on a racecar IF this is in fact one of those bodys. The other one I know is still racing and also on the east coast.  Looks like a racecar that was probably only raced locally by someone in Mass, certainly I have never heard about it.

I remember back in the early 80's someone bringing one of the one piece bodies to one of the IVWA races , the doors did open and close . I think it may have been Jack at Bugstuff but not sure.  I remember John Toomey and I really wanted it but just couldn't swing the cash , a couple years later I did Jacks tube chassis for my Ghia with every fiberglass panel except the roof , 1170 lbs wet .  Mike McCarthy

Found out I have been wrong for 26 years.  Billy the kid and what I thought this car to be...are not empi bodies.  There was never a full fiberglass empi race body made
All along many people have told me, and I passed on that Billy was an empi body.  We were all wrong. No such thing.  It is just a all fiberglass body pulled from the mold of a 57, done back in the 60s in California.  However, only about 15-20 of these were ever made.....if the car in Mass is in fact the same body as Billy the Kid.

I think the confusion comes from the fact that the Jouster was built by Empi using one of these bodies, albeit a severely modified one. I think that the Quarterflash car used one too, and I seem to remember another car with one?

I will see if I can find them

Just like Paul Harvey used to say, "and now for the rest of the story" .  I just got off the phone with Jack , the owner of Bugstuff and Champion Chassis , he is the vendor pictured at Manassis and did show the body at Farmington when I saw it. In the picture of the body at Manassis he carried it to that show to deliver it . The bodies were made in the late 80's and production ended when his manufacturing facility burned down around 1992. All the molds were detroyed along with the ones for my Ghia panels . Jack still makes and sells parts and has always been a great guy to deal with . On his website he goes into the history of his business adventures.   http://www.bugstuffonline.com/index.php    Mike McCarthy

I have Pete's email as he is a racer in the series I put on. He runs Billy the Kid and a split window gasser, Jaimes Toy.  He is the one I emailed and he gave me the back story on Billy the Kid

Thought I'd resurrect this thread. I'm officially the new owner of the Super Steeler drag bug! I'll post pics of the rescue mission and my trip back to Western PA with the car. Looks like I've got my work cut out for a winter project now!!!

Well, the recovery effort went smoothly. It was a 24 hour straight job. Woke up at 3 am to catch a 630 am flight from Pittsburgh to Boston. Owner of the "Super Steeler" was nice enough to pick me up from Logan and run me to the Uhaul place to pick up a truck and trailer. I was pleasantly surprised with my sight unseen (in person) purchase. The interior is full of period go fast parts including a set of Italian 48 IDAs and a Magneto. The header is a pretty wild one off unit with a welded stinger. There are sumps, extra heads, and a host of other parts. I drove straight back through to Western PA and got back at 2 am this morning. Today I'll go through the car and see exactly what's there. Rear wheels are original 2 pc 8 spokes. More to come later

(I think they're hp estimate on the decklid is probably a teensy bit exaggerated for a VW race car from 1972... Roll Eyes )

Thanks man! I'll start and new thread with pics today with the clean out and link it here. It's amazing the balls these guys must've had to drive these things in the 70s. This thing is a complete death trap, and let's just say the safety equipment is marginal at best. I'm guessing some upgrades will be in order if this car ever wishes to take a trip down the 1/4 mile memory lane...

this one ??

This one was built by Classe Trimco Ebbenäs in Stockholm Sweden mid 70´s and ready to raced by late 70´s.
It was yellow with large TRIMCO text on it.
RIP peace in VW heaven Classe!
