It's old school for a reason

« on: December 26, 2013, 13:20:56 pm »

Hi guys

Anyone come up with a low cost solution to running a racing alternator and mounting bracket ? There a few solutions on the samba but with tax and air freight I'd be looking at about $700

Weight isn't a particular issue so don't need anything too exotic

hi Ron

if weight really is no issue, and budget is, then why not just use the stock stand and alternator with no tin or fan attached? plenty people have done it that way

cheers Richie

Richie
Would you use a power pulley to keep the revs down and avoid losing the belt ?

Cheers Danny

Looks good, do you have a ebay link for the pulleys ? What bottom pulley bolt did you use ?

You could do but I don't see the need for that, without the fan on there I haven't had a problem with them coming off, but if you use the typical Chinese alternators then they don't like high rpm so if you are spinning the engine over 7500rpm a pulley to slow it down will extend the life of the alternator

cheers Richie

the denso alternators are rated to 16k rpm  i run mine at 1-1 so it shouldnt run at much over 10k  Wink Cheesy
heres a link to the pulleys but im sure i paid about 8 quid each for mine and i just bored the centre out of bottom one and shimmed it out to clear an old bmd power pulley that i was given i think i used a cb long pully bolt but again not sure on make as it came with the engine parts
since the pictures were taken ive bored out the cap so it has a 20mm id tube on top for the breather pipe ,and it has performed great all season with only a small fracture on one weld that was redone early in the season and since then its been good as gold  Smiley if you wanted i could always send you this one to copy? or i think i have enough ally to cut out the pieces then you could get them welded together?

Danny

It would get great if you could cut and send the bits to me, let me know how much you want. I have a welder down he road who does a few bits for me now and again, it would save me a lot of grief mocking things up etc

Thanks again

Ron

Instead of an alternator, do you want to go 1/2's on a quad bike and tow it back? Grin
