So guys, winter is around the corner and I want to update my 1915cc.

Current specs:
AS41
DPR 69mm C/W
SCAT I Beams
Mahle pistons + cilinders
Engle FK-8 , CB straight cut
CB lightweight lifters
Manton pushrods
1.4 rockers
123 ignition (009)
1 1/2inch merged header
041 heads 39x35.5 (small porting)
Weber 48 IDA's

Gearbox is a built one with weddle sidecover, superdiff, SAW axles, 4.12 R/P . 3.78, 2.06, 1.04, 1.44.

Looking to upgrade my heads, exhaust and ignition.

Exhaust I would like to have a A1 header + muffler (only 1 3/4 inch?)

Igntion Petronix Ignitor 2 or CB Perf. Magnaspark 2? Any difference?

Heads.. don't have clue which to get? Steve Timms? CB Wedgeports? Is 160-170 bhp possible??

I always suggest Jeff Denham for headwork, as I am sure anybody else that has dealt with Jeff would. You might ask him about his non-welded 40mm or 42mm x 37.5mm, like he did for Harry. They would keep air speed up (good thing for stock stroke motor with big carbs) and run cool. I don't think you need a 1-3/4" header, I'm sure the 1-5/8 would better suit your displacement and keep torque band nice and wide, yet still breathe up top.

160 ouof 1914 with small heads won't be a easy task.
my fried's 1914 with 40x35,5 los banditos ported with about 9ish:1 CR C45, and as I remeber 1,1:1 on 40 DRLA's ,1 5/8 merged VWSpeedshop  header with 2,5" turbo muffler of VWSS also did 127HP and 154 Torque.
here is he graph.


I use Pertronix distributor with Ignitor II and flametower I coil (the car abowe has the same as me but ignitor I). Works really grate smooth and powerfull.

It looks good and from what Tiger says it make just as much, if not more, power than a standard merged exhaust. The magnaflow mufflers they sell are nice too! Talk to Tiger he will set you up. 160 hp is definitely possible. Let us know how things progress. I really like 1914s as well. Grin

I have had good luck with the Mallory Unilite distributor and VI-AL igniton box, but it is important to get the proper coil for this setup. At first I had a "standard" liquid filled coil mounted on the case. Bad idea! The bakelite top cracked and the cooling fluid leaked out. Excessive heat or vibration could have caused this, Im not sure. I called Mallory and they told me I had the wrong coil, so they sent me the correct one. Its a small coil pack with aluminum heatsink fins. Its an awkward size, so I mounted it underneath the parcel tray above the transaxle.

Anyone knows if my Berg traction bar will still fit with the lowdown header?

The power ALWAYS lays in the head(s). Think about it it`s ambiguous  Wink
When you mount a low down header you can`t drive dual packs that fit under the car...
Total seals (2nd) would even be an option to think about.
And don`t forget to open up the manifolds top 2 bottom.

Never mount the coil to case or motor...The vibrations kill the coils quick.
I drive a Mallory 29440 (really like the look/ like old rubber batterys) with an 009 & Ignitor and Mallory Hyfire 6 and are pleased with it.

Coil is mounted with rubber dampers on the sidewall, Mallory-box under the rearseat even rubber mounted to get away the vibrations.
No Probs so far.

Have fun updating an engine is always nice!

Thanks for the replies guys. I won't use dual packs I will use the lowdown muffler with it. But will a Berg traction bar fit?

My coil is mounted to the firewall using a jaycee mount and rubbers so should be fine. Really lookin forward to update the engine this winter and run some better numbers next year on DFL 402 and DDD Smiley

it would be nice if you had some 1.6 rockers to go with your 380+ cam lift. 611total is a more  Grin Grin lift. a 1915 can make a 100hp on stock heads NO PORTING with a good 3 angle valve job blended slightly with a BABY cheater cam. you've got the BORE that's whats important. just my two bits . UD .

AMEN, Mark, rules are meant to be broken. Besides the Sidewinder IS a cool exhaust. Sometimes mixing old with new is ok.  Grin

Jeff is right, I got a 180+ with my K-8 way back, and I think you can use a traction bar, works with s small spacer, thats what Tiger told me with my first Lowdown system, but ended up using a kafer bar type set-up instead, works really well, no wheel hop at all.
