Hi Cal look friends! I'm thinking about getting a 2332cc engine in my oval. The idea is to have about 200 HP in a reliable fast road engine mated to a strong gearbox. It has to have 48 IDAs, MSD ignition, straightcut gear but which kind of crank ? What sort of heads, valves sizewise?  FK 89 Engle cam?

I'm thinking 8X31 final gear for the box, to keep the revs down on the freeway. What else would you recommend? The car is already 12 V, has disc brakes up front, dual circuit, KYB shocks, front antiroll bar and Empi tramp bar on the gearbox.

Thanks for your help into turning my sweetie into a road screamer!

It would appear, based on expressed opinions by people far more mechanically minded than I, that a JPM Raptor cam would be good for that power on the street.

I have one, made 220 bhp on dyno and ran 12 second quarters and ran well for over 5k miles until a retainer broke.

Head wise JPM heads are expensive and make
More power than you need. There are some cheaper options for 200bhp.

Sure someone will make some other suggestions too.

Good luck

84mm dpr
5,5 rods
44/37 044 wedgeports with ported manifolds (CB 650 springs) or go 044 ProGas
10-1 CR (or more depending on available fuel)
FK89
1 5/8 or 1 3/4 merged exhaust
IDA's with 42 vents

Fluff and buff the heads and it should make 200FW hp all day long.

Sounds a great combo this... petrol available here is 95 or 98 rated but there's no need to use higher CR on a fast road car I think.

I have a Raptor 6908 camshaft (274 degrees) and my heavy, stock Beetle has run 12.6-12.7 seconds in the 1/4-mile (on drag radials, without burnout) at Friday night Street Legal races.  Lots of fun, for sure Wink It's also quite smooth driving around town, and I use 94 octane (98 European) with 10:1 CR.

In my previous combo, the engine had a proven 180 HP at the wheels (chassis dyno) with CB044 Ultra Mag Plus heads 44 x 37 valves, K-Roc porting and Web 86C...and ran a 12.9 quarter-mile.  Go for it!

This was my combo for a maximun torque, yet fast and still reliable street engine - though with 45 DRLA:s:

- polished Bugpack 84mm crank +8 dowel lightened flywheel and Chromoly bolt
- Kennedy stage II + 200mm, Kush-Lok
- 5,5 Bugpack H-profile rods, new ARP bolts. Porsche journals
- VW block machined and reinforced, ff,
- 94mm AA cylinder/pistons
- Schadek 30mm oil pump
- Porsche 911 oil squirters
- KS crank bearings
- Raptor PM00806 (263deg at 0.05” , 9.64mm cam lift and 106LC)
- JPM 7075 billet dual taper pushrods
- Scat steel straight cut cam gears
- JayCee no leak tubes
- 1,4 SCAT Pro-Comp 4340 Chromoly rockers
- DRD CNC L7 heads 42x37.5
- MSD Billet T-1, MSD 6AL, MSD Blaster 2
- Dellorto 45 DRLA's with 36 mm venturies
- S-S Sidewinder
- CR 11.05
- wide oil sump, filters, coolers etc.

Also Rancho reinforced Pro street freeway flier.

In fact it still takes some months before this winter is over and my -59 is ready for roads - and dyno

Final drive would be 8X31 to avoid the engine revving too high on the freeway, yes...:-)

You're still in the process of building this enginne then? Any idea of what sort of power and torque it should deliver?

Engine has been ready over a year now, but it's not been tested yet. Now my project -59 is hopefully ready before June this year and then it is time to give a good drive with it.

I asked a famous Finnish pro to build the maximum torque and street able engine with quite free hands and this is the result. I don't like to scream the engine with high rews, that's why Johannes recommended quite a modest cam - but you know with JPM it is proved to be strong. We put the level for HP:s at 5500 RPM around 160 - 180 with 45 mm DRLA:s but I wont be surpriced if the torque will be closer to 250 than 200 newtons. DRD L7 ported heads with again - modest - valves, but 1:1.4 rockers will promise fast flowing gases and high CR should make the engine more like these modern ones

You can see more on project -59 sleeper...
