My tube chassis is almost rolling and we will be moving our attention to prepping the shell for the chassis.
As the chassis has not been tagged yet it has no paint on the tubing.
Although the workshop is dry the tubing is starting to develop surface rust. How can I combat this?
Don't want to paint it until its been tagged as they will probably not like that?
Any help appreciated.

Mine did that especially around the welds so I painted that bit the guys were not bothered about that but cheated and had the whole thing blasted and expoy coated

Permanent anti rust = owatrol oil. Just use a piece of cloth and apply. Very easy. Not so permanent, a cloth with some WD40. I have used bare chromoly parts on my suspension and have used Owatrol oil. Not a sign of rust after 4 years.

WD40 works great on parts we machine and are bare. but like Kalle pointed out, it won't last. but it will dissolve the rust and it is easily if used with a fine grid sandpaper, wiped away with WD40, but it will leave marks anyway. thanks for the tip Kalle, i want to look into the product you mentioned as sometimes it would come in handy both at work as on my car.  |

Lee Gibbs oil available in a large spray can and is about £18 per can, works a treat on my mag spider mags. keeps them nice for 6 months outside in all weathers and can be painted over once dry.  http://www.getgibbs.com/2013/how-to-prepare-bare-metal-for-paint-with-gibbs/there some more info in off topic regards Ron |

Definately this stuff. Did a whole chromoly cage and chassis rails + lots of other bits of bare metal. It's only been 6 months or so but no rust, still great, and apparently you can paint over it. I'm sceptical about that bit though.... |

Great pictures of the bare metal beetle. Might try both. Half and half on the chassis and report my findings.
My Dad has produced some lovely welds on the chassis so maybe I won't paint it ever if this stuff works as well as it should do!

I recently had a Chromo cage put in by Jim at Cotsweld... I painted the whole thing with industrial chassis black, this caused no issues when getting it tagged at The Pod.
Not to mention it smooths off to give a cracking finish.
