Looks like the same idea as some of the early gassers used - Small Wonder had that sort of thing made by DDS if I remember correctly. I always wondered if they worked!

Go to Shoptalkforums and search for Paul Guard (Gears) excellent thread on "how to save your ring'n pinion". Very interesting and detailed.

Yes, The Small Wonder did have a set on it, maybe it was DDS.
