depth of the step is 14.5mm

That's the wrong measurement (or a typo?)... Measure the shallower step, between your copper head gasket and the chamber. Usually between 1-1.5mm.

Remove the copper head gasket as well, it is possible there is a step under it as well.

yeah sorry new at this no step under the copper gasket which is 0.040in/1.02mm if that's important the little half moon step is no deeper than a finger nail thickness (I know not very precise)

Evening all

Have now got most of the parts to start again with my engine Big Thanks to Richie
just waiting on the cam which is on order

So thought i'd start by looking at balancing my pistons so took pins out rings off and weighed them.

     piston              pin            rings

1:  391.4            134.8          38.4
2:  390.2            134.8          38.5
3:  392.8            134.9          38.5
4:  392.3            134.9          38.5

so I use no 2 as base weight and try to get the others to match simples  Grin

now I've been watching YouTube been reading articles and as with all things they contradict each other  Huh
I will be using a Drimel
where do I take the material from some say above the wrist pin area and some say from under the crown

I will be practicing on a old piston first

The people I had balance my engine took the material off the inside of the piston PIN, not the piston itself. The pin stayed with the piston.

i did it that way, the pin material is a lot heavier then the piston material so a lot less had to removed in my experience
