Hi guys,

Last year I picked up a 1 owner 69 beetle. All original and never messed with. My plan was to run porsche pattern rims and a 2 inch narrowed beam to offset the dropped spindles but keep everything else stock with the view to be able to jump in it as a family and use it for a trip to the beach or just out and about.

This weekend that plan went wrong! I figured I would get bored with the pace of a 1300 singleport motor and thought if I didn't go too crazy with cam/CR I could still jump in and use it but still have a bit of pace if required. What also made this more of an option is some bargain engine parts I picked up yesterday.

This is what I have as of yesterday!
69mm welded CW crank and light VW flywheel (8 dowell)
Mexican AS41 case (new at some point as no engine number)
Mahle 94 B+P's

These parts are not new and have been well used, but will definately go again!!

I  thinking of putting my spare Cogbox close ratio box in the car too (stock box still an option, 1300 ratio)
Cogbox box is 4.125 R+P, 3rd is 1.48 and 4th is 1.04.

What I would like is 140BHP but with a sensible CR and cam so I don't have to worry about checking tappets and it cooking itself.
I have a 1776 in my 63 beetle that has stock heads and a 120 engle but just doesn't have enough pace to make it interesting, but certainly is an easy maintanance go anywhere engine.

So in summary, what Cam, Heads and Compression ratio would you recommend?

140hp with a 69mm crank would be a big ask with a smallish cam. If you're dead set on using what you've got a nod want 140ish hp then you'll have to force feed the motor.

A more sensible option would of course to get a bigger crank and build a lazier motor instead of a stressed motor.

A 1915 is going to need a big cam and a healthy CR to hit 140hp. 120hp is easy with great driveability (torque) as well.
I would also second think the gearbox if you are planning on driving it for a distance.

So keep the stock box and go for 120 ish BHP.
What spec would you suggest?

Engle 120ish cam, .500" at valve, 9:1, ported 40x35.5, 40 Dell's or 44 Weber's, 1 1/2" header. It's what I built for my friends 67 (with 48's), stock ratios. Lots of torque and revs very nicely. Great bang for the buck engine.

Thanks for the advice guys,

Inspected the parts today, the crank is a DMS welded counterweight so I am pretty pleased.
Off to the machine shop for a check over.
Case is a Mexican universal AS41, all standard and hopefull it doesn't need a line bore.
Rods are stock balanced and B+P's look like they will clean up well.

Makes me think a mild motor is not the answer anymore....

I had a 1776 street and strip before with light but proper ported (Steve's heads) 043 heads and 40x35 valves .
1.1 Rockers and a WEBCAM cam (dual lobe something) .  That worked very well !
I could try and find the cam specs if necessary ...

most likely a 218/119.  Wink

i had the same engine from him. drove very nice. i had it with 40 IDFs and afterwards changed them for DCNF's and that even improved it a bit more.
in my engine we used 1.25 rockers, but i would stay away from these with that cam.

from the top of my head it had 123 hp. give or take 5. my flywheel was also stock weight as it went in my fastback.

Very driveable, plus nice and quiet, until you floor it.
If you put a merge header on it it is likely to pull close to 150 hp.
Only heads up is - don´t use CB lifters with Web cams now. The hardening on the cam versus those lifters are not correct. Use Scat lightweight, as they match the billet.
If you need to buy your way to a set of heads I suggest a set of Tims stage I

The motor spec has changed a little. I now have a Tony Mance 71mm crank and some new street eliminator heads (42x37.5)
Will run the close ratio box also. Looking for a 13 second street car

What part number are the scat lifters you mention?
