My wife has always wanted to see the northern lights, and Norway is one of those places where they are visible.

Can any of you Norwegians advise as to the best town/location to stay and how to get there?

Happy to hire car etc, but need to see if its feasible or a real ball ache.

Thanks

In addition, Tromsų is known as "Paris of the North", so plenty of bars, restaurants and other things to do as well

Thanks for the replies. Looked up tromso.  It's a 24 hr drive from Oslo, so looks like flying is the best option. Is there a cheap hotel chain in Norway that has somewhere up there?

Tromsų is not a small city and you can find all the known hotels up there. If you book your hotel in good time there is a fair chance you will find good discount deals. Late February to late March is the peak seaon and the city is packed with tourist.

And yes, you do NOT want to drive up there. Flying is your only option.

No, not any more. The currency is on your side.

Diesel is 9.50 krones = £0.75
A really nice hotel room with a ordinary (credit card, web) discount is 1000 - 1150 krones = £75-95

What you will find more expensive is the super marked and road tax.
