avon makes always nice looking tyres,also for motorcycles.
but i don't think they will be cheap Huh

These are great tyres!!
One of my 'pet hates' is Cal-Lookers on modern tyres! I have a set on my 912 road car and they transformed it. I've also circuit raced with them on a 356,very progressive, predictable handling....loved 'em!! Not the lightest weight tyre but top quality construction. They're good in the rain too, especially for a vintage tyre....we used to be allowed to upgrade in a wet race from the Dunlop Racing tyres (crossplys) that we have to use and the difference is amazing, although that's not much of a comparison as the Dunlops in the rain are like greasy ballbearings on glass!! Shocked
 They're slightly noisier than a normal 'modern' radial on the road, probably due to the compound and surface area as the tread is very 'vintage'/minimal but the 'feel' is excellent. I'll be getting some more when these wear out....although the price is more than average they're worth it in my opinion.....it's your only contact with the road so worth the price IMO......and they look sooo good!!  Cool

My favorite are Michelin XAS, I had a set back in the 70s and they were awesome.

Interesting information, especially about the wet condition capabilities. I would NEVER have expected that from a tyre with that kind of threading.

Michelin XAS and Vredestein sprint classic are far from a performance tire on a hot rod VW.
Yes been around forever and unfortunately they seem to last forever too.
The 145s on the front never seem to show much wear.
I'd be interested in the Tread wear Performance vs. Grip/Handling Traction Performance of the above tires.
The speed rating is important but if its rated at 125mph and the tread-wear is in the 400s you know that tire is as hard as a brick, no grip...

Imho if after 7 years on your car the tire tread is not worn out then you could consider a softer tire.
Tires older than 7 years should be replaced, rubber rots, I would not trust a spare tire with full tread that was older than 7 years.

It would be nice to find some R rated radials with tread-wear rating in the 100 to 200 range.
The bug with the 100 tread-wear rated tires would out grip the bug with the hard as rocks Michelin XAS and Vredestein sprint classic.
Since the VW is so light it is easy on tires and can accommodate softer tread tires.

I've gone through a few sets of Avon Bias Ply slicks on my other air cooled car, lots of grip.

I have these on a pair of spider mags I have in 205 70 15

Nice feel and loads if grip but I got these second hand via a deal I did, not sure I'd want to paid the price for new ones
