Hi. I'm about to Give my late Beetle the Cal Look treatment. I've got myself a nice set of BRM's front 4.5 rear 5.5. I plan to stick Michelin XZX 145 x15 on the front. But it's the rear that's got me scratching my head. The wheels are offset ET:15, and I'm guessing that a 205/70r 15 might be a big ask. So I'm thinking 185/70r 15. I've been look at Michelin XWX or the slightly cheaper Avon CR6ZZ. I'm no mechanic and I'm thinking my Beetle being a 1991 Mexican it will be IRS. Do you think I'll have clearance issues with 185's? They cost a fortune so I wants to get it right. Any advice would be a big help. Thanks guys.

Agreed, but don't think it will fit due to the irs axle length.

A friend of mine has a 90's Mexican bug and it is swing axle.  Looking for the raked looked I'd say 195/65(or70) or the 205 mentioned previously.

That's what I'm thinking. I'm not interested in dropping the wheel into the arch. I'm looking for that Arse end up, deep race tyre look.

Kind of got my heart set on a 70r. I think the axles are too long for a 205, otherwise that would be my first choice.

Sorry to loan the topic but this fits my question too. Got a -68 bug with long axles and 4x130 centerline reps on 15x5,5 with small offset( 10-20mm?) Was gonna fit the rear wheels with some 205/70 rubbers. What do you guys think, gonna have clearance problems? Ass is gonna be up all the way for some good rake.

thats interesting Baz. I think the tape measure will have to come out for this one. I'm betting 185/70r will be a nice snug fit. I think the 205 will fowl the arch.

Its the wheel choice that messes it up, this is a "long axle" IRS car at close to stock height with 205/70/15 on and clears easily both sides, inner and outer. I would try a tyre shop to see if they have a old scrap 195/65[ or similar to give you idea] they could fit on your wheel so you can check fit on the car before spending out on new tyres Smiley

I have now 195/60 on those same centerline repros, and one outer click lowered. They fit without problems. Gonna lift it to stock thou on the rear.

Sorry . . . USA VWs got IRS starting in 1969 . . . I do not know how the IRS "track width" compares to that of long swing-axles.

IRS track and late Swing track are the same at 53.1" while early Swings are 50.7" track.

Same wheels and 215/65 M&H DOT slicks is as big as you can go on long axles / IRS.

Yes, Mexican Beetles came from the factory with the late "long swing axle".

I have 215/65 M&H's on my '68 Beetle, but that only worked well after I switched to short swing axles.

with ET15 and long axles i would say 185 is max under stock fenders.
i have 185R15 on long axles ET25..
