And the '72 1200 with the '72 1300

Interesting that the fenders are not German '67 spec, judging by the location of the horn grilles.

Congrats with the finished car. So how does it drive?

How about fitting some spacers for the rear wheels?  Smiley

Wish it was completely finished, lots of small jobs to do still but it is 99% there. Next pictures will hopefully involve some movement.

From what I know the Standard model wasn't sold in USA. You were supposed to have more money than us  Grin But maybe they sold the 1200 engine choice in the 1300 body... Huh

No it's a different shape. It's basically 1300 fenders with a hole for the horn grill and the bumper bracket un-opened. And it's also different from US specs '67 fenders, due to the late model apron.

I bought mine in '77 from a service guy who had it shipped over from Europe. He bought it new when he got out of the service and drove around Europe for a few years before shipping it here to California. When I started "fixing" it up, I found Turkish, French, and German coins under the front and back seats. I figured he was telling me the truth.

So it was probably a 1300 model, or a 1300 with the engine that was replaced with a 1200 before it was shipped to USA.

I never said anything about a 1200. It had a 1300 in it when I bought it....It's long gone now, so it doesn't matter.

I know disc brakes were optional on the 1300. I think you could have it on the 1200 aswell. Another thing is that the 1200 was 6V, but I was told from some owners that it was possible to ask for a 12V conversion when ordering the car.

Getting back to the Cal Looker theme ... Hard to argue with this ... although, it was to be his 'daily driver' and doesn't quite follow ALL the 'rules':

Well nobody ever said SHUBEE ( shoo - bee ) ever followed the rules. I'm pretty sure this is the car he bought before leaving Ventura.
But i'm certain all the rules would apply to the '58 he was building !!  LOL  Grin

He didn't follow them 'cause he MADE the RULES!
Yes, it still had the Cali black plates ... till I changed them over to TEXAS!

Hopefully I'll have something to say over the '58 ... in his name ... SHOOB! Wink

Edwin,
So it even came with the smaller taillights too?
Is the transaxle IRS or swing? I think the Mexican Beetles had gone back to swingaxle ...
Any pics of the interior, or is that yours that already was posted?
Pretty cool ...

Cool before and after pics, Glenn. Unless it's been posted already... that would make for a great thread subject; before & after shots of Cal Lookers.

Yep, it came also with the smaller taillights.... but no irs on this bug, it is a verry basic car, small headliner, only one sunvisor on the driversside, and a view other things to make the car as cheap as possible... Cheesy

The interior as posted before isn't mine, my car has a black interior...

This is a picture with the original decklid and wheels...

I know for certain the builder doesn't want it!! Wink

Very true. Hence why I chose the word "sad" in my previous post.

Edwin, the car is perfect and already Cal Look ready from the factory. I like it! A great base to start to with. Wish that we would've gotten those models over here in the States. Just add wheels, lower the front end, a nice engine/transmission, and you're done. Disc brakes optional.

To the people from Europe that posted the history of the Standard or Economy Beetles... thank you. I've seen a few examples over the years but have yet to see any with the vent indentation behind the rear quarter windows.

Your car turned out very nice, Edwin.

Yeah that's the one. I saw it just after he bought it when I visited him in Ventura.

I've had a couple of threads on here of different cars I have owned, and also the previous owner of this car had a thread about it - I bought the car as a roller earlier in the year and have added the engine and a few parts from my old 54 to it, along with a few changes and upgrades and some new wheels. Smiley

The car and I go back a long way, I painted it red for another former owner (a buddy of mine who has since got out of the VW scene) and installed a 1914cc engine into it many years ago. I'm really stoked to have it back in my garage... I love it and hope to own it for a long time to come! Think I'll be going back to red with it sometime, but will just enjoy it as is for the time being.
