Seriously it's not all that special in the flesh, and I've no interest in keeping it if it stays stock.

Robthemanx does them on here.  Smiley only long bonnet though I think. You'd have to ask him.

I had a bit of a dogfight with an MX-5, he wound his window down at a roundabout when we stopped, I think he was listening to see if it was something else powering the car. Stuck to him at 90+ Bet he was laughing pretty hard. Shame we didn't get a proper start from a standstill, then he could have seen the back!  Grin

Yes, lovin' it, need to get me some air filters, Donald says I'm driving it too much to run open stacks.

Found these

600 cubic feet per minute, need to measure up and see if they fit ok.

They can flow air just fine, but when the element gets soaked with fuel from standoff then it will flow a LOT less. Also presents a potential fire hazard.

As long as you aren't driving dirt roads you'll be just fine with open stacks.

Thanks for the advice Zach, much appreciated. Fire  I have an put a extinguisher in the car, just for peace of mind, but the thought of fire.....not nice.

I have notice I have picked up a film of dirt on the stacks a couple of times and wonder if I should or shouldn't get filters, worried the dirt might score the bores.

I must admit the sound of open stacks is intoxicating Smiley

What about these little doodads?

thanks.

Same issue with those, very restrictive. Perhaps less of a fire hazard though. The filter element can not be directly above the stack unless it is WAY above the stack.

That's a tall order on a Beetle isn't it? No pun intended....

Must admit to being conflicted here, several folk have suggested filters, so far my answer has been it spoils the roar, but I am keen to protect the bores on a car that used on the street, if that's possible.

Seen these on images of cars, easy enough to take off with a pair of pliers.

you can get filler socks that fit over the trumpets and can be taken off in seconds. Good for long journeys

Never had a problem with fire and done journeys of 4-500 miles with them on

The wear isn't as bad as you are thinking it is. I've seen the 94mm bores of a daily driver open IDA engine that had a good amount of miles on it (can't remember exactly, this was nearly 15 years ago), running around in dry Phoenix, AZ. It belonged to an old roommate of mine. We also drove it through a dust storm in the desert on the way to a VW event in So Cal... Decklid standoffs, wide open carbs. It felt like we were doing horrible things to that engine, but upon tear down the cylinders were no worse for wear. We just figured it spat out whatever it sucked in Wink

If you are regularly driving dirt roads, then absolutely get some filters. Otherwise, don't worry about it.
