May 1980 HotVW's article Hot and Cold

I just thought I would share this info. I found a May 1980 HotVW’s magazine for sale and bought it. It has an article titled Hot and Cold, the BMW gray car that belonged to Bernie and Pamela Stahl was featured in it. This car was listed for sale in the Orange County Register newspaper for a long time. My brother finally talked my Dad into going to look at it. The owner took us for a ride and none of us had been in a 12 second street bug and we were all blown away. The car had chrome rims and hub caps on it for the street and the centerlines and slicks for racing. My Dad bought the car for my brother for $4,200 which was a lot for a bug then. The article came out a couple of months after we got the car. Rod drove it daily for some time until the motor acted up. The motor had a Lee Leighton sticker on it so we called him and took the motor out for it to be looked at. He told us what the heck are you thinking driving this on the street every day! He said this motor isn’t built for that, it had Fumio heads and all the good stuff.
Lee Fixed the motor and we but a 1750cc motor with good heads and 48’s for daily driving and saved the 2074 for bug in’ and drag days. A 12 second street car was fast back in 1980, fastest VW in LaHabra area of north Orange County. The car was parked in front of our house one night and a drunk driver destroyed the whole driver’s side. We took the car to Becker’s Bug House and they fixed the car and painted it black, after that it became strictly a race car called Radical Rod. I thought some of you might find the history of the car interesting.

Awesome story! It's not often that anybody can keep track of their old cars, especially ones from that far back!

My car is what it is, maybe not Cal Look per the books, but it's more than most.
