Nice project Russell.
I've only picked up on this thread today.
What happened to the original "Pepto" car? Couldn't have rusted out in California?

Bill, can you answer that one Huh

Russell
I posted a photo of it some time ago - in Japan on a used car dealer's advert in Let's Play VWs, or one of the other Jap VW mags.

Saw Bill yesterday - he's more than a little bemused by the fact you're building a repro of the car!  Grin

Bemused..... Strange word to use....

But a good question, with 2 answers.....

Answer 1, it's cool and it's pink 😄

Answer 2, more truthful to be honest, so many things really, I've always like the early cal look stuff there was something plain and simple with it all, Bill is what cal look is all about in so many ways, he always acknowledges you, he's put so much into the scene both with DKP 2 and 3, had is car over in UK and demonstrated numerous time his car car can do both the show and go, takes part in the lounge, etc, etc

Bill has also helped me a few times especially getting some BRMS correctly detailed, a number of years ago after reading the book 2, I asked bill about the square and said I really like the idea of doing a replica, he told me he still had and original headlight rim in the pink as well.... He truly let me borrow it, so we could plans a build around this, ensuring we could get the perfect colour match for the paint.

Anyway the right car came up for sale in December and that was that, let's get it done.

Honestly, I am a bit taken back that somebody would want to recreate something I did so long ago. However I am completely humbled and honored that somebody finds value in recreating this piece of time & what it represents. My family & myself are really excited to see the finished product. I know its going to be awesome.    Bill

Wow, I had to look at that REALLY close, but I would say that it is not the same car. Lots of little changes ,dual muffs vs A1, different tail lights, gravel guards, my car had the bezel under the oil fill chromed & the cap painted body color & I don't see that.  Sadly I think the original car is gone.... sure had me for a minute though.

In that advert, I remember reference to 'PEPTO' amidst all the Japanese script. However, I can't see it in this ad. Perhaps there is another ad? Now maybe it was just saying it was 'like PEPTO'! I guess a new owner - or the garage selling it - could have added the little extras to spice it up? Remember all those Jap businessmen with briefcases stuffed with cash at Pomona swapmeet buying absolutely anything and everything back in the late '80s, and 1990s? Buy a car, wheel it onto a trailer and head for the port. Can easily imagine the car looking a little down at heel at Pomona and being snapped up... Would be cool too think it might survive somewhere.

Good time to say Hello I guess  Smiley

Russell first gave me the headlight rim for this car getting on for 2 years ago now on a visit up to his place and asked if I could match the colour, didn't have to look far or for long as after looking through my vw paint chips I found it straight away, L40m Vw Poplilla.

We've spoke about doing this car several times since but late last year one of my US friends posted a throwback Thursday pic of it on Instagram and I replied saying I had the headlight rim, told Russel about the post that night and it obviously sparked something off because within a month a squareback turned up at my shop and we got started just a few days before Christmas.

I have to say, there's something exciting about doing this car and I'm humbled to be part of it all. I'm mainly known for full stock restorations etc but when I put the first coat of paint on the inside the other day I just stood back and smiled, think there was even a 'fuck yeah' thrown in somewhere too 😂 And knowing Russell, if the original cars whereabouts was known I know we'd be re doing that car right now but seeing as it's not I think this car will work just fine 😎

Having had a small part in the build of this car, I find it amusing that it has garnered enough attention to recreated

Looks like you got the color. Most of the pics I've seen make the original paler looking than it was in real life.

I've always loved this square when cruising back in the day.
I even talked to Bill at one of the scs shows about trading for my 67, he thought about for a week or so before calling and said he wanted me to throw in some 48's with the deal. At the time I didn't have a set or the funds to do it  Sad
Very very cool that it's been thought about to do this. Thank you Russel for all the recreations of these vw's to keep this hobby so interesting and Bill.. I still think it's a badass ride  Grin
