So my son, Owen wanted to update his 67 for the 50th anniv of the 67, so he wanted a set of one piece windows for his Christmas....

He also wanted the car dechromed and larger engine and some original BRMS (to borrow) and a vert decklid...

So wings off, chrome removed, decklid swapped, windows out and interior out.
and off to Si at the Paintbox for some paint and welding up trim holes.

LOL
Santa provided the windows.
He has stolen the decklid from me
He's only borrowing the wheels.
And he saved up the money for the welding/paint.

I love the fact that when the car was built he had his only idea and now 5 years on he wants to change it making it more personnel, just so happens that we nearly all approve of the direction... thank god its not a whale tail or roof rack he wanted !

If Owen fancies a short trip out with his bug on the 17th of June we are organising a vw display at Carnoustie beach along with some other classics. We will have a cal look line up  (I don't know how large the line up will be).

Russell,  what did Owen do for the engine in the end? Just wondering about insurance and the like - got a couple of Year 11 students who are interested in getting Beetles soon and have no idea about insurance costs for new drivers.

Neil, it still has a stock 1500 but it will be changed but as he's just 16 he has another 10months to wait.... TBH i think he will buy a cheap daily to use until he has some experience first rather than wreck his pride and joy... getting figures of about £1800 for a 17 year old on a 1.0-1.3 litre Polo, so its not cheap but does come down quickly after a year or so of safe driving....

We had the same with our son. Try a VW up. Lots cheaper on insurance. Polo was around £1800 for him as well,  £650 on the UP as a learner and £900 once he passes.

Cheers Russell, that's pretty cheap to be honest - one of my students paid £4200 insurance on a Clio!

Daft as it sounds, has Owen had quotes for a RHD UK Beetle? Just a little runaround that gets him used to a Beetle?

Not yet on the beetle, we haven't had any quotes for him directly it's all friends who are 17 that we have our info from, I'm a bit nervous if he starts looking we will be swamped with insurance junk mail, I have been told that the insurance comparasions web sites are best way to go, next years worry !

4200 for a Clio wow

The up sounds ok but what worries me is the protection in an accident.

Owen starts as an apprentice with vw in September and we have been told working in the motor trade also hikes the price 🚗

I got mine insured shortly after I turned 18 it was £700 a year with adrian flux (third party, fire and theft) with the stock 1500 and my dad as a second named driver. Im 20 now and its gone down to about £350. I paid alot less than all of my friends at the time!  Grin
