Gauges back in the early days

VW was not offering much in the way of keeping track of your engine...so what was everyone running in the very early days for gauges? EMPI was an option I'm sure, but what were the other options? When did VDOs become the industry standard?

So sure how early you are talking about, in the early 80's, I ran a Autometer 1400-9600 rpm tach, Autometer oil pressure gauge, and a Autometer pro light for oil pressure.

Stewart Warner tach, Smiths vacuum/oil pres/ammeter and a Murphy switchgauge for oil temp in mine.

I pinched them from my uncles street racer (mid-late 70s), close enough.
PS: I forgot. Lots of gauges from earlier models were used too, not just bought new, so think Smiths out of Jags, VDO out of early German stuff, whatever you could get.

Built in late 70's- early 80's.
All VDO Cockpit.
Speedo is out of a '74 Sun Bug. I don't know if it's different than the same year Beetle.

That's quite interesting, guess it's from around 72? My 71 (non-cal look!) auto Fastback has that "solid walnut shift lever handle"
