So that would be Dick Nuss? Is he the shorter main guy? Didn't they used to build some really nice heads?
I will have to finish watching it and the part 2 tonight.
Thanks for the history lesson!!

Jim,
As you seem to remember a lot of the people in our hobby can you remember the name of an old school builder with an Italian sounding name?
I think he died recently but there was a thread on one of the sites with him showing some young lady all of the machine tricks and special tools he made as he built her motor?
I think I also recall some video but as I cant remember his name dont have anywhere to start searching!!

Ray Vallero was part way through doing a series of transaxle videos when he died. When my dad and I put the gearbox together for my car, we watched the videos and modified the superdiff accordingly. None of us are getting any younger and knowledge will disappear as we all do, so anything we can do to archive this info is vital including converting old videos to digital!

I followed the same super diff thread on Shoptalkforums.com which was a better read.
Does anyone know if Berg's blue book is available online?
Gene was strict about copyrighting his writings so I wouldn't be surprised if it not online.
These days the attitude is more lax than in the past.
I'd like to scan it one day, if it is cool to do so.

About 75% into part 2 you can view Dick talking a lot about detail of headwork, done for specific motor combinations.
Beautiful work.

What I loved about this 3+ hours is the thoroughness and the full explanation of "why" they adhere to the processes they had proven to make work. Nothing gets left to chance. Everything is checked. I started really slowing down in my own engine builds, much in the same manner, about 15 years ago, when I was asked to assemble a top-shelf 90.5 x 84 street engine, all new parts, from A to Z. Even with the best of parts, it's not hard to get yourself into trouble if you aren't careful and stay three steps ahead, and learn what problems to look for. Setting up valve springs, setting up cam timing, setting up relationship of the arc the rocker must travel in, bearing clearances, oil pump mods. All need time.
I love that they proved it's all about volumetric efficiency, making the porting and carburetion and valve timing work for your cc, even if it is as small as 1679cc.
Makes you wonder what advances have been made since then.
About 20 years ago, a friend of mine built a red hot 88 x 74, not with FK89, but with a beautiful set of Heads Up Perf VW casting heads, 86B Web and 48IDA's. Easily a very low 13 second street car and as smooth as any bigger stroker I had driven.

I started watching last night. One thing that strikes me is how expensive parts were back then! Holy crap, you would need a really good job to afford some of those parts. More than a couple hours OT he says and that's for sure. Now for just a couple hundred we can buy beautiful H-beam rods, or forged CrMo strokers cranks, ratio rockers, heads, cases, all super cheap made in China. No wonder not many people make small motors anymore.

The other thread about Vallero and the super diff was on TheSamba.com.
It could be the same thread as the Ultimate one posted above, but the youtube vids play inline with the thread so you don't have to jump around webpages.
Titled "New Vallero tranny build for Hugo (1963 bug with 2185cc)" it reads like a storybook with a woman who wanted a better transmission for her Daily Driver 63 Beetle and the 2185cc engine that Ray Vallero built for her (she mentions a build thread that would be good to read).
Luckily for us she chronicled the whole trans affair in this thread.
As life would have it, in the middle of the project, on page 2 Vallero has a heart attack and dies thus a tragedy
yet a compelling read nonetheless.

Seeing Bill Duncan and Dick Nuss after all these years, I can't help wondering how many beers were consumed during the making of the videos... Thos who knew them back then will understand.

The method they use to check valve to piston clearance is brilliant, I'll definitely be using it on my next build!

Ok thanks you, you pointed me in the right direction.
But the info I wanted starts at minute 49, valve to piston clearance.
They explain that perfect.....
I know how to do that on DOHC engine, but never knew on a beetle engine.
Companies that make cams for DOHC engine also give with their timecard the valve to piston
clearance at a certain degrees before or after top dead centre for inlet and exhaust valves.
Never see that info on beetle cams.
You really want to know that the exhaust has 2mm clearance, that's the critical one.
