RHD 67 bug inquiry...
«
on:

This may be a no brainer question but I have to ask...
Right hand drive
American spec 67
... with upright headlights, 12v, wide 5 wheels, drums, towel rail bumpers etc...
Was this an unusual thing from the factory? Seems to me that any RHD 67s would be Euro spec. No?? I realize there were several countries in the world in 1967 that drove on the right side. What determined whether these countries received Euro spec vs American Spec?

Could it be Japanese? I think RHD is their norm. Not sure if it would be American spec otherwise though.

The vehicle in question spent 25 years in India before making its way to California. Shipped to India straight from factory in Germany.

only countries that i am aware that got the US spec RHD 67s are Japan and Thailand. in Thailand i was told you could select between the 2 specs. both countries got the US spec bumpers for both options. 67s sold in these 2 countries, Malaysia, Singapore all had US spec bumpers.

Interesting. That being said...I wonder if there’s documentation on the number of RHD 67s supplied with full US spec. Certainly seems like it would be a small number.

So the cars from Singapore had sloping lights?
We get some Japanese and Singapore cars here in NZ but I am never sure which are which.

Singapore, Malaysia all sloping headlights, F series 1285cc, wide 5 drums, 6v, single speed wiper motor, 4.375 RP gearbox, US spec towel rail bumpers, single circuit brakes, all direct import from Germany thru a company called Champion Motors. we never got any Euro blade bumpers, all US spec bumpers. some NZ cars were actually exported from Malaysia/Singapore those days.

I would love to see pictures of those upright-headlamp RHD 67s
according to the spare parts book this was indeed possible from the factory, the M code for upright lamps, sealed beams, 12 volts, etc in a 67 is M611,which is listed as applicable to all models from 111-to 118, as well as verts (!) 151 and 152

I've never seen it, but I think someone I know has one here but he is part way fitting air suspension....
We didn't get real '67s sold here as the locally assembled cars were from Aussie CKD kits with small windows.

This is all great info. Here are some pics of the bug in question. It’s Zenith Blue with a Sept 1966 build date. Please, keep the info coming!

Beautiful!!
I HATE to use the word "rare" so I wont.. But would this be more on the unusual side of things, not seen as often?

Maybe, that’s because globally there are only 2 official “categories” for VWs, US and and Euro models. Over in other parts of the world they get more “complicated”. I would say we are lucky in a sense that our cars are not that much diff as they are still quite close to the US and Euro models.

This is another original RHD originally brought in by Yanase, the dealer in japan. From the online translation I think it is unrestored original paint.

i got them from thailand junk cars. they are not worth anything here as most want the original sloping headlight fenders and they cant be used on late models either.

Lucky you, plenty of US 67's with later "standard" upright fenders that have been changed due to accident damage over their 51 years of life.
Stuck in an airport last year I even found images on my phone where just one fender had been changed by the bodyshop, that makes the difference stick out like a sore thumb.

In Thailand, we have both sloping and upright headlights.. mostly of the early 67 sold in Thailand were sloping headlights, 1300 with wide 5 drums.. later were upright headlights, 1300 and 1500 with US spec bumper.. but got 4*130 discs in the front for 1500 models. Somehow, we also found some 1200 standard models exist in Thailand nowadays.

This makes my car even more of a head scratcher. It’s a September 66 build (early)... it’s 100% American spec.. wide five/drums. Unsure what motor it came with, I’m assuming 1500.
I really should order the birth certificate.
