Why is the R missing in tar babe?

All a bit odd, as there is a guy on the samba who claims to have the original tar babe chassis too.

I would say it's a fake, but no idea why someone would build a replica in that condition? Only thing I can think is that someone was building a replica and abandoned the project when the original turned up. I'd like to know more!

How has the door lettering survived whatever it was that took the paint off of most of the door?

Have looked at some old pics of tar babe, the gap between the bottom of tar babe and the sponsors names is far too small on the pic at the top of the thread, compared to the original pics of tar babe. I'd say this one is a fake Smiley

The pan and suspension isn't original to the tar babe that was restored in Europe for starters.

so that will be a replica of tarbabe
here's another phto and the lettering was done just to see howit works  there's soem commetn on the hot vws page on fb
here''re soem commetns

Alejandro Gamboa This lettering is just a "test and see" how it could look, it's not even painted on the other side. Greetings from Mexico.

Alejandro Gamboa We had the original Tar Babe in Grillos Racing (Mexico City) and sold it to Mr. Russell in Europe, now we want to make a replica of the legend that was with us for so many years. Greetings from Mexico

Er, no. I have plenty of photographic evidence from the teardown that the one in Russell's collection is the genuine 'shell.

Same here from when I saw the car in Mexico City about 15 years ago. There were many genuine details about the car that neither Mario nor Alejandro knew about.

Google translate says:
"It's just a copy
It will not be for sale
A friend had it for many years, recently I gave it to him as a gift"

I think it's cool anyway, but I like a good chop top and this does look like a good chop!
