hello,
I've seen that's lots of people break her gearbox when racing with street and strip cars.
One of my friend is building a cal look with an 82*88 IDA motors. 188hp on the dyno when he used it on the track for endurance race. (was not reliable, he has use later a Type4). According to him, the best way to have a very strong gearbox is to use a bay window gearbox on a irs floorpan.
But, how it is possible to bolt a such gearbox on a type 1 floorpan?
Is it a good idea?

Berg makes an adapter to mount the IRS bus tranny in a bug.

And if you have a few extra coins, they make a 5 speed version of the bus box now too.

I'm wanting one of these, it's the best set up as far as I can tell for an uncompromised street car.
Unfortunately I went with a 4 speed Type 1 earlier in the year as it wasn't certain how long it would take these to turn up. I guess I'll have to get a race car or something to stick the 4 speed in so I can get one of these for the street car. Be a shame to waste the 4!

i have that conversion in my race car, works good.
just check the U-joint bolts occasionally because they loosen up.
the bad thing is that it moves the motor to the passenger (or UK drivers) side of the engine compartment about 11mm
doesnt sem like mutch but carb clearance is close.
i had to cut a hole in the side panel for the micture screw to poke thru.

THEY WORK GREAT - I HAVE A IRS PAN WITH BUS BOX IN A BAJA - USED THE MOUNTT KIT FROM A OFF ROAD SUPPLY HOUSE IN SO-CAL - McKENZIES - MUST USE TRANS WITH HORN MOUNTS ON TOP OF BELL HOUSING - USES URETHANE MOUNTS W/SLEEVES IN SIDE - MUST INSTALL 1 1/2 TUBING TO SUPPORT TOP MOUNT - NO VIBRATION AT ALL - VERY NICE WAY TO SUPPORT TRANS

But, it seems that is not very usefull in my case. Great for a hardcore looker, but useless to put on a mild engine as I plan to do.
I think it will be more simple to use a stock gearbox with a poor man posi and a superdiff.

If you have a lot of miles on the road, i think poor man posi is not a good option, it worns the diff really fast...

I think you're wrong Rol.
It seems that the super diff suffers a poor lubrification. But last ones I've seen (mounted in KCR trans) had additional lubrification holes in order to avoid these problems.
The poor man's posi is the best option as far as you don't stiffen it too much.
Quaife is an other way,... other bugget!

I'm intending to put a bus box in my '51 and had also heard that it moves the motor over. Obviously the engine compartment is tiny on a split anyway, but is there a way to mount the box so that the motor is still centralised? Different length axles from side to side? Custom made mounts?

Having gone through it with my oval , yet to fit the body on though !! The mounts need alot of prep work to fit straight and its really worth while doing, even from just putting the two boxes type 1 and a Type 2 box you can see how much more strength there is.
