Hi all!

To get more people to come out and race and to make all shelf warmer parts useful, we have started a challenge in Sweden (Nordic countries) we call "The 1600 Challenge".

The rules are simple and are only related to the engine:

Aircooled VW based engine with 2 valve technique
Displacement 1584 cc (1600)
Piston size 85,5 mm +- 0,5 mm
Stroke 69 mm +- 0,1 mm
Valve size 35,5 mm intake, 32 mm exhaust
Normally aspirated or power adder - it's up to you
Nitro and Methanol prohibited
The car must of course follow safety regulations based on ET and speed

If we will run time slips or at specific events, one class or one NA and one power adder class, is not decided yet. More information will come in January/February 2020.

The hype around this has caught Sweden - imagine running time slips all year and a final shoot out somewhere (BRC/SCC!?) - would be wild!

The main thought isn't to be the quickest rather to get people to race BUT for those of you who are record addicts - the current world record resides in Brazil and is 6,48@168 km/h 1/8 mile.

NICE!

Try to be a bit more specific, were possible, like on the fuel. C16 or modified gasoline......?
Power adder could be NO2 but what if I add water/methanol 99% methanol with a separate ECU?
Just to not have too many surprises of ingenuity and freedom in interpretation.

Frallan!

Any gasoline that is ruled ok to run in the country where we run. Metanol and Nitro is prohibited in all senses.

Our country has  a class1641 cc single carb. .. now become most prestigious class with a huge off participants

I drive a 1600 fastback and just started playing around with nitrous.
Sounds like it would fit me like a glove.
Living in Belgium the entire program will be to much. Maybe 1 entry.
I was thinking about doing SCC again next year...

I've said about my old 1584 motor before - stock crank, rods, pistons and barrels, cam, lifters (never split the case!), new but stock valves and springs. Lightened flywheel, 1.25:1 rockers, match ported heads, CB Performance tall manifolds with 36DRLAs, 1 5/8" merged header and stinger.
In a stripped race car (1639lbs with fat driver) with slicks and a close ratio 'box, it ran a best of 15.75 @ 83mph.
Although the car is long gone and the engine spun a big end and is now in several buckets of parts, it shows what can be done for anyone thinking about it!

Very nice - it doesn't take a lot to have fun. The level you want to go is up to the individual - the rush of racing is always the same!

Exactly. I think it was actually more fun, if a little less exciting, than wondering how long my bigger engines would last...

Hi!
No dates are set yet - at the moment we are looking at running time slips i.e. sending the time slips to me and we keep a list. Will make it easier for everyone to run at local events. If we manage to get together in the end of the season would be great, but nothing is decided yet. More information will come in Jan/Feb.

Yes sir! Should I list it here? Anything Sunoco or VP is over the counter, if you wish to pay for it.

Love it Smiley

This is a great idea for some even playing field grass roots racing.

If done by timing slips this could be open to guys outside of Sweden or even Europe ?

Anyone in the UK interested in getting involved ?

I for one definately have some parts lying about to build a nice 1600  Grin

Thanks

Hi!
Yes the heads can be ported. Niklas heads are ported - I will port mine this coming winter - put my efforts into getting the chassis to work perfect first - then more power!

I think Niklas Ghia is around 800 kg with him in it. I do not know the exact weight of the buggy but around 600-630 is my estimate.

Nice work Johan!
With the un-ported heads, can I ask what model head you chose?
I hope at least you added dual springs and a nice valve job!(?)
Thanks, Dave.
