Karmann Ghia with Webers
«

Hey guys , my Karmann is getting the 1600 cc engine with 40 idf on it.
I was wondering about the original black plastic inside the engine lid .
Is it better to have it installed or removed regarding thermal issues and fresh air ?

On my '71 Ghia I think I managed to keep it on, but I did have to cut the filters down to get them under the hinge springs, so that might have been part of it! It was a long time ago though, so I might have had to remove it... Definitely had to cut the filters down though.

Thats what i thought aswell , the hinge springs might cause me problems.
I have to see what i gonna do around there .
I see this plastic as a rain protection.
Not driving it in the rain anyhow , what about the heat in the engine bay ? Suspect it should go down with the plastic removed

Just for info , with the Udo Becker manifolds it just fits perfect ! No need to take out the springs or the plastic.
Just fits as it is

I have a 1641
Scat cw crank with scat rods
Engle fk65 with 1.4 rockers
Stock heads with stainless valves, single hd springs. Very mild port job as explained in the VW beetle performance handbook.
38mm merged with S&S dual quit pack
Msd 6all ignition and 40mm Italian webers.
Engine is built by nicholas. No idea how much power she makes, probably not more than 80-85hp I suppose, but she puts a smile on my face every time..

You guys have got shorter manifolds than I had! Mine was a 1641, stock bottom end, with 1.25 rockers, 1 5/8" Bugpack merged header and twin quiet packs, and 36DRLAs. If I remember right, it was about 85 bhp, and ran a best of 18.03 @ 85ish mph.

I always use the Udo Becker ones ! On any IDF build , the quality is great , just by looking into them you see the difference to cheap cast internet ones.
On top i prefer to support the „little“ tuners who are doing their stuff with heart and soul.
Ok i got the advantage to know Udo , and owning his old racecar .

Mine are csp space-savers. Did do some work on grinding them smooth on the inside and matching them to the heads...
