Hi,

Who are people using for insurance in the UK on their modified beetles and what's the cost like? in my head i feel it will be hugely more then stock.
do they just want to know value and power or...?

On the recommendation of Lee C off here, I went with Brentacre for mine. £150 for the first year, then the next year it went down to £130! Agreed value of 6k, 2007cc motor with 48IDFs, BRMs, 912 seats etc. Pretty happy with it, and I'll be going back to them when the car is back on the road.

Well i didn't tell adrian flux about any mods for years , I told them cause a mate smashed his modified 928 , he got paid out ok, but it got me worried, anyway ,as I say I told them and they wasn't even bothered. LOL. Price was the same £140

I have been with brentacre with at least one car for the last 15 plus years. Yes they have got a bit bigger as a company so you don't always speak to the same person anymore but their service is great. When my wife's car got hit they were great at bollocking the body shop who were useless. They really do love and understand modified cars and look after you

Adrian Flux for me. Agreed value of 10k (probably 2 low but the interior isn't great so lets the car down). 2276cc, lowered etc etc etc. £165 fully comp. Never had to actually use them so don't know what they're like for dealing with a claim.

I guess I need to adjust the V5 to the engine size and number of we’re going fully legit here too.... other wise that could catch me out.

I have a friend to always declares everything on every vehicle, non standard wheels, remaps ect. I used to think he was silly but the older I get..... Roll Eyes

Yeah mine needs a couple more holes sorted and then a respray. but who wants to look nice when you can go fast instead  Grin

Neil - can you not stamp/engrave your case and change your V5 accordingly ?

My last engine used a new case and was engraved by the engine builder with his name and number he'd built.

I could, I suppose, but as I've still got the engine that is on the v5, I've not worried too much. Next time I scrap a case off I'll use that number as it could be considered a replacement part.

When my beetle caught fire, the first question from the insurance company was about modifications. I listed them, they told me I wasn’t insured. It took me 4 hours of misery to prove that I had listed them when I first insured, they hadn’t carried forward the records when renewed and they were never listed on the policy for me to spot, just the engine size. They then sent someone to check the modifications. They paid in the end, gave some cash back by way of apology but it was clear what their intention was. Had I not kept all records, they would have left me uninsured.

Worth listing everything and keeping a record, just in case. This was RH Insurance as a broker and now under Hiscox, a modified specialist.

What a nightmare that must have been.

It is definitely what they try to do, avoid paying out. A good friend of mine from school had a job with a local insurance firm (large company) and his job was to investigate claims for loop holes to get out of paying! Unfortunately he was very good at it  Grin

I knew a guy who worked as a consultant for the insurance co on theft claims where the car was burnt.  If the insurance co suspected something fishy, they'd send the car to the consultant. He's pull the remains of the engine out and take it apart to find blown timing belts and all bent valves.  Or a grinaded gearbox. It was always interesting to hear about his latest project.

I use classicline, £155 agreed value £10k unlimited mileage (HAHAHA), breakdown etc. Everything declared 2.2 litre etc.
