for many years I have not quite understood what they have in the water in Scandinavia. and I still don't.

amazing what comes out of these regions for over a couple of decades now. I love the attitude, I love the craftsmanship, I love the innovation, but I can not wrap my head around it.  Shocked

these 1600 challenge engines with std valves (35.5x32) can give a little hp if you think about it a few times
JPM s gives around 178hp
JP s gives around 172hp (available on FB)
  With 40 valve

Really amazing what these guys can pull out of these stock valve size heads. Truly shows there craftsmanship!
I've seen some pictures of the headwork, absolutely mindblowing!
My question is, how reliable are they on the street? Or are they purely for racing purpose with a narrow powerband and in need for specific short gear ratios?

It's racing
Cr is around 14.5-15
Flow is important (but it always is) about 160-170 cfm @ 25 "
The gearbox is not suitable for the street if you do not want high revs
One of the most important things on the strip is heavy flywheels with a heavy pulley if you want a good 60 foot
Just for info, the Brazilian has driven 5.88 with turbo engine (around 500hp) with standard 35.5x32
When you compete, it is only 1/8

As Micke noted, these are race engines. Period. If you start on a clean sheet of paper and want to build a high power stock valved 1600 engine that will be functional on the street, - and by that I mean that it should work as a commuter, on the Motorway and a grocery getter (Normally aspirated) there is a limit to everything. Peak power is not the problem. The challenge is to make a set up that has enough usable torque in the lower rpms to be easy to drive and at the same time roar at higher rpm. What is a good street engine (?) That is an individual definition, but my definition is: Easy to start, usable power from 1200 rpm in 3rd gear and a general power window of at least 3000 rpm.
With the things we know today I would say that the power range for a Super street" 1600 is around 135 hp with peak around 62-6300 and peak torque of approx 160 Nm around 4700 rpm. I would build a long tube 4-2-1 header with a custom chambered muffler for it to get the widest possible torque band.
Would it be financially feasable over a larger displacement (?) No, but its possible.

And people just read because it's dead
Here in Sweden, a lot of things happen at the 1600 challenge
a car was in the dyno a few weeks ago 510 hp
But you may not want to leave info what it is in it

I have redone the site as there were not much action in there and the site was under heavy SPAM as it was a member sight. Now it only contains the important stuff: Results, rules and classes!

Just mind you that if you are to run in the Challenge you won't be able to run a 88 mm piston as it is not according to the rules.

I read that afterwards. so that is indeed a no go. OK all jokes aside, I am not aiming anything at the moment. let's start out to make an actual engine perform better than stock. maybe with a good plan and a good quality build it could reach 100hp. I think this is already a huge challenge for me. that is something I want to do. and now that I have said it, it is something I will try to do. but see it as a trail and error, not to show my knowledge or be competitive with anyone else.

as a side note there is also a topic of a 1200 challenge and 100+ hp was reached on a dyno... also interesting. especially being single port and even smaller valves.

my idea with all of this is actually to NOT be daunted by the 175- 180 hp numbers and just go for it and every HP above 65 is a win.  Wink

I have now 3 64 cranks and 3 69mm cranks when I did my complete inventory this weekend.  Roll Eyes one has already been 8 dowelled and was actually my 1st crank in my first engine. that was a 1641cc. the flywheel of that one is still being used in my fastback and is probably the only part left of my original engine when the car came out. it's all good fun and thanks for the support.  Grin
