I see them up for sale every now and then. Didn't they have problems leaking or wearing out quickly.

The 40P11's were avery common carb setup on cal look engines back then. People had problems with leaky throttle shafts, and began replacing them with the IDF'S and their bigger ventuies. The people that kept the 40P11's in service usually had learned that there was more than one style of throttle body and some could be serviced and some not. The Solex guys always had an enormous collection of throttle bodies and various parts on hand to keep there stuff running. A very cool carb setup to look at and a very mean sound to them when you put your foot in it .

hey john...they were cool to look at and they did in fact sound  nice with open throttle but never taken to the limit with the vw scene due to tuning difficulties and expensive part replacement.....i can still remember back to 1974 and racing roger grago next to don burns vw(the DGVA club sponsor) in his beautiful ghia equipped with a 1700 engine with some heads and 110 cam...we raced best two out of three and i won with my h/p single port 1600 stock carb engine in my 67 sedan..!!  i can still hear the drone of those solex 40 P11's trying to catch up...you had a set of these carbs at one time/yes??..a shame ..but i know of guys that gave them away because they couldnt get them to run right..!!

guy i knew years ago ran them on his autocross 2180cc and was always top in his class. knew his way around them i guess. knew they were popular- but seems even 356 guys opt for weber IDFs. nobody runs the good old zeniths either anymore? wasn't it the off roaders dream carb? maybe limited in its hp abilities with dinky venturies and throttle blades.

I almost bought those same carbs lowfastbus! Im wondering now why I chickened out Huh Roll Eyes
My GTV currently runs a single Zenith on the original engine and I love it! But when it comes apart for more displacement, cam, ect. it will certainly need more carb. I would love a pair of P11's... or DCN's... or... or... Wink

I ran them back in the day on my '63.  Arnie, Jim Brooks and I were "the Solex guys."  There are two types: the early, solid throttle shaft model and the later slpit shaft model.  I always ran the split shafts, myself although lots of guys hated them.  If your careless and dump the carb body in parts dip, it will eat up the small jell-like block where you adjust the throttle plates causing severe misery...same with installing the "space ship" looking pre-venturies upside down...BIG PROBLEMS!  Seems like I ran 14's with a 1700cc motor but can't be sure.  I may have a pic for you next week if I can find it.

The 40P11's were also very big with the slalom guys at Bug-in's. The Zenith crowd is still alive and well. The baja and rail guys still run them.     Oh , Hi Dyno! How are you ?

I think the thing that got me started on 40P11's was how cheap they were...seemed like you could buy whole, brand-new-in-a-box carbs for $60 or $70 bucks each.  Gene Berg made nice magnesium manifods for them and had linkage and jets as well.  I was working at the Porsche dealership in Riverside at the time and carb parts were readily available for both Zenith and Solex through Porsche, so it made things pretty easy.  Solex 40P11's came with 32 mm venturies and I remember scoring a set of 36 mm chokes from Vittone to experiment with.  Berg sold the Arnolt Solex manual back then which offered a wealth of good information.

Yeah, a thing of beauty.  The old magnesium ones really took a nice shine.  Solid motor mounts were tough on them though...I cracked mine more then once  Angry
