I'll be running these beauties on my new 'daily driver' motor; 76X90.5, orig. EMPI manifolds (!), stock-valve ported heads, FK41 or W120, etc.
Can't wait to get it going.

Love to have access to Sarges stash of parts and knowledge! Wink

Wish me luck!

Great carbs... if you can get/keep 'em running and remain tuned. I've always like 'em, but they're too much trouble. My roommate (ex D.K.K. member)  had a set on his '60 ragtop. Even he couldn't keep 'em tuned and he has the patience of Job. So he ditched those and built a 1955cc 48IDA engine and put in an all original '66 Beetle sunroof.

Maybe this summer I can get some pics.  One of our crazy buddies out here has a lot of stuff, including a SPG-crank motor with Solex's on Gene's manifolds.  Got to drive it once, it sounds MAD.  Pretty cool little motor.  And it was built back then, as far as we know.

That set up is rediculous!! Where did you find those stacks? They look like new machined items, no?
I've got two pairs of carbs now (one split shaft, one solid shaft) and I have a pair of the tall EMPI manifolds, but I'd really like to swap them for a pair of the EMPI globe versions. The stacks I'm thinking of are siamesed together, kind of like the ones on Gene's old Little But Quick dragster...

The stacks are newly produced units. I found them being made by a guy in the UK, but can't locate the purchase papers now. Google search?
I'm looking forward to getting them going. I have some experience tuning several 356s and early 912s & 911s. Never really had any problems keeping them going. In fact, their reliability is the reason I've looked into them again, that and idling those things down to 600 rpm and just listen to it purr. The progression circuitry is far superior, in my opinion, to much of what else is available to us.
I have several pairs laying around, but always preferred these single-shaft styles.
We'll see what happens. I hate to think I'd have to pull them for a pair of IDFs ...

Nice to see others trying their hands at 40P11-4's.  TT.... that's some serious intake length; you gonna get all that in the engine bay, dude?? Wink  The only problem I ever saw with Solex's was that the throttle shafts wore out easily.  We'd send the bodies off to HG Bieker Machine in Burbank for the fix... no more 1400 rpm idle.  I still think they're a cool (different) choice.

Those are VERY cool, Zach. But you're right... that price is hard to believe. Especially 'cause I'm quite sure that they can be made for much cheaper than that.

Hey Texas Tom, those heads look intriguing... look like small cc chambers. How about some pics of the headwork?
I'm really curious about this motor...  right up my alley.  Cool

Rattman,
Hate to disappoint, but those heads are currently hemi-cut! Their future, however, holds attemps to severly cut the chamber down via massive flycut and potentially incut the pistons to the same resulting diameter ... kind of a super-squish thing, although I have no experience with the SS thing ... it's just an experiment.
The porting is directed and minimal as to size ... not very interesting as to photographs ... however, very attentive to detail and matching.
I just hope it makes the noise and is proper!
Thanks for the interest!

I remember Jim Brooks from DKP having them on a 1700cc and always seemed to run very good.  This was late 60's early 70's. Brown car with chrome Porsche wheels with Porsche hubcaps.    Dave Rhoads

I'll have to 'dig these out', but I also have the original set of 40 DCNFs my brother bought back in the mid 70s from Claudes Buggies!
He ran them on a 78X90.5 engine with an Engle 120 and "high" compression. Back when all you needed to do so was premium leaded gas and a bottle of Moroso Octane Booster. I remember the fumes and smile.
I'm sure they're worse for the wear, but another popular 40mm carb choice 'back in the day'.
