Driving Hot VWs for 44 Years Strong!

« on: January 20, 2008, 19:55:15 pm »

I think it would be great to post some of our old cars..even the PRE-CAL Look gasser era shots.  I am posting a couple projects from 1971 and 1972-73. It was in the heart of the gasser years.  I've seen Sarge and Jim Holmes on here now.  Let's bring in a few more.

These are cars I was building when H/Gas and I/Gas was hot in the early 70's.  Usually someone came along and bought them from me and I did not get to own them long.  Stay tuned.  I am in the process of assembling a couple new Cal Lookers...one chopped.

Here is an additional Chopped 67 I was working on. Look at the crazy shirt and hair!  I will post the chopped oval before finished shots.

The chopped oval and early Rick Mortensen. Check out the whacked out flared fenders.  Anyone remember "LIME FIRE", "GOING BANANAS" and some of the other early chops?  Some one purchased this one from me once in primer and I never saw it again. The front and rear fenders were fiberglass, as were the front and rear hoods. The rear hood had the big scoop in the middle like some of the early drag bugs had.  I chopped the top 4".

Rich Stanchfield eventually got the going bananas car, if I remember right.  It later became a chop top with a different name.  Maybe I can get Rich to find this site and make some comments.

>>STRIKE 3..YOUR OUT..!!...being the prior owner of Going Bananas and also a good friend and roomate  of the late Dan McGrath i can assure you that Going Bananas was not a chop top..///also in the same frame of things rick stanchfield had nothing to do with  Going Bananas but rather bought and chopped his own sedan back in the day which he named "Tuff'e'Nuff.. circa 70's ....Dyno  ..ps, rick i still luv ya..!!

You do some mean chops Rick. It is tough keeping a good profile on a chop. Any of your current projects going to be a chop top?

Being a relative newbie and cal-look wannabe I love these historic threads.  How about a complete DKP history thread with all the members from DKP1, 2 and 3 with a picture of their cars.

That would be THE coolest thread  Cool (if it's not be done already  Embarrassed)

Dyno....No offense taken.  It is an age thing. The car I was thinking of was the TUFFnNUFF car.  There were so many old cars, it is hard to keep track of them all.  One of my other favorites was Dennis the Menace, the SUPER BUG chop, the ORANGASM chop, and a host of others. Even the GREVEN Bros, Andersen Bros. Tar BABE and more.  There was no end of the chops being done...then of course there was BIll Mitchells radical chop top that freaked everyone out about being done legally with the stock window angles being retained, as the NHRA rule book called for.

Thanks for clearing things up.  I was thinking of Stanchfields car but Going Bananas was stuck in my head.

Here is my 67 Bug I built in 1977.  It was my first 67 and had all the traditional trimmings of a Cal Look.  I had a herculon interior, including the headliner and dash.  It was crazy but it was the look at the time.  Deck lid was popped out for the carbs and tall manifolds to clear.

Notice the license plate of me and my newlywed wife...it read "RICANN".  Can't say she was as enthusiastic about it as I was.

Here is another shot of my early 67 in front of the Costa Mesa, California, Auto Haus store.  This is the same one where Doug Mische cut his teeth on early hypo VWs.  His is one of the most incredible 67's ever built.  Mine was just a daily driver.  I was visiting so Cal with my wife and our newly born child.  Grandma lived in Orange and we drove the 67 all the way down from Sacramento to visit.  This shot was taken on my rounds to the various VW shops over the weekend while the wife visited her mom.  (Fall of 1977).
