Whose stupid idea was that?

« on: February 05, 2008, 07:09:20 am »

Can any of you help me figure out what color this actually is.  Its a 1966 and it has red painted seat brackets and rear seat posts and supports.  I imagine it had the "Pigalle" interior.  Now I have been on The Samba and many other places and I cant seem to convince myself that this is "Pearl White" L87.  The brochures from 66 show Pearl white with the red interior but I cant seem to find any good pics of Cal Look cars with OG Pearl white paint that I can match up.  As well, I can't or have'nt found the color codes anywhere on the car.  Where are they?  From most pics I've seen it looks more like the Ivory but that doesnt appear to be offered in 66.  I am at a total loss.  I'm trying to do a small color match and any help would be appreciated.

VW doesn't encode the color in the VIN.. if I remember on my '67 there was a little sliver/gray sticker with the color code and name... separate from the VIN

pictures usually differ in colour from the original because of the light. my guess it is pearlwhite and that would indeed be the correct white for that year and combination.

hi,

maybe I'm a bit off, but I take it that the car is yours, and you have possession of it, as you haven't found any color code stickers on the car...

Then, my suggestion is to bring the car to your painter or paint supply store and have them mix your "touch-up" color based on what you actually have on there!

Even if the color is indeed the L87 code, it surely has lost some of its "original flavour" over the years and doing "touch-up" paint on small areas are always a bit tricky.

Mix up some L87 hue and do a sample bit on a piece of metal and put it against your car. That would give some indications.

Some paint-shops / professional painters also has some kind of "gadget" to "shoot" the actual color of your car to get the "recipe" to mix the paint to the correct hue.

My dad-in-law  did some touch-up paint repairs to an old -36 Rolls-Royce, which had been repainted through the years and naturally the codes was long gone. After a few attempts from the local painter, the painter managed to mix a colour to a perfect match to what was already on there.  Smiley

Good luck!

from the photo - it looks close to L90D (Pastel White) rather than L87
My bug is L87 - at night it loks almost beige and in sunlight - more like Pastel White!

Thank you all for your help.  After pouring over as much information as I could find.  As far as I can tell the 116 VIN number series TypeI in 1966 with the red interior was the Pearl White L87 so far as all the color charts that I have seen.  So, I went on www.paintscratch.com and ordered a can from them.  If you don't know about them they will take your stock color request and put it in an aerosol can for you.  I ordered a can and when it gets here I'll try it and if necessary I'll take it to a pro.
Thanks again Gentlemen
