Right, I am selling as much stuff as possible on ebay to upgrade my brakes!

So who has disks, what kits are recommended - wide 5, any tips/tricks, good experiences, bad experiences - any special offers to forum members Wink

I am running a narrowed beam with stock spindles at the moment.

Pictures would be great!

Cheers,

Steve

CB Kit is simple and cheap enough at the mow , the BAD set up is a nice bit of kit , but you dont 100% need it.

the CB kits do seem a bit of a bargain, which almost makes me nervous!

I notice they come with dropped spindles, which makes them even cheaper!!!

CB or CSP that is the question!  Undecided

I chose CSP for the German quality.  My front end is a CB 2" narrowed beam with CB dropped spindles.  The beam is adjusted (avis adjusters) to hits highest point allowing for a nice ride over bumps.  I am not able to lower the front from where it is as the tires would interfere with the fenders (especially on the side my fat ass is parked on  Roll Eyes).  If I had it to do over, I'd narrow the beam a bit more, but then you'd get into a stiffer ride from the shorter torsions...damned if you do, damned if you don't!  I'm running Type III drums out back and have hammered the brakes hard more then a few times...the car stops nice.  Hope this helps.

Great stuff, Cheers Sarge!

I have a narrowed beam, but can't remember by how much was done years ago before you could get them off the shelf!

Noticed CSP do a zero offset kit for no extra cost.

I am happy with the ride at the moment, stock spindles and adjusters.

If I go with CSP I won't be able to stretch to the dropped spindles - I have found 2 prices for the kit in the UK though one £120 less than the other! sheesh!

German quality does look favourite so far, a staged upgrade - fronts and master cylinder 1st then save more pennies for the rear kit!

hmmmm

Still interested in people's experiences of the CB kit, much cheaper and with dropped spindles - too good to be true?

I've got CSPs on my '67 - they were the first set they sent over to the UK - so at a guess they've been on my car for just short of a hundred years and they're still working fine. The ones I got made the front end wider than I wanted it to be, the tyre on the LHS rubbed the edge of the fender/wing under braking or hard cornering. So, a narrowed beam was essential. They do lock if you have to stamp on them in either wet, greasy or autumn roads - but that has always added to the excitement for me - especially if you start sliding a little to the left or right.  In their defence - the team at CSP (Peter, Thomas ,Helge and Gunter) are serious about service and the quality of their products - they've spent a lot of time building a great reputation - and were very keen to WARN me that having stoopid skinny 145 front tyres would mean the car would lock-up under certain conditions. All I was worried about is that it locked-up when I hit the line-lock button!  Wink

If you're not sure - you're welcome to come out and see what it feels like in my '67 Steve. Just bring a change of underpants with you!

That's a new bumper sticker right there...  I brake for beer!

Far better than my old one - I brake for hallucinations... That sticker got me pulled over by the police more than once - well I think it was the police, but they were dressed up as sheep. Weird.

Right I think I need to make this clear - some of that story is true  - i did buy a sticker that said that when I was over in So Cal in the mid 80's.
A quick google search shows you can still buy them, and license plate frames too.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&q=I+brake+for+hallucinations&btnG=Search

But some of the story isn't true, as police officers dressed as sheep did not pull me over for having the sticker on the back of my car...

No apparently the sheep police pulled me over because I wasn't allowed to drive a hover-car so low to the ground - well, not unless I was coming into or leaving a hover-dock.

Don't you just hate it red tape? Grin

CB Kits are cheap for a reason dude - THEY ARE CRAP  Angry for a start they use FIAT calipers  Shocked
They mount the caliper towards the front of the car (all others mount towards the rear) this mean that you have a extra long flexy hoses AND on link pin cars with NO steering lock stops this also means that the caliper hit the beam/torsion arms  Shocked Shocked Shocked NOT GOOD!!!

TRUST ME these kits are CRAP Me and Gav (G77) are in the process of changing from CB's to CSP's  Roll Eyes Smiley

Oh yeah they also come with really really crap Aluminuim washers for the Caliper/hose/banjo bolt  Roll Eyes

It's already been said but the quality of the CSP kit is pretty much second to none. I have a set for a car that is currently being restored and we have changed our choice of wheels which now means we can't use them but I'm hoping that CSP will be able to come up with something beacause I don't want to put anything else on the car. In time I think my '63 will end up with CSP brakes too.

When I sold you the '63, it had 356C discs on the front and 356A drums re-drilled to 5 x130 stud pattern and this was a great set up that worked very well on the car. I can see no point in changing this set-up, apart from, perhaps, if you wanted to run different wheels - but then the Fuchs that were on the car are hard to beat really. Or is there another reason that I haven't thought of? What the other car you're talking about?

Maico discs - seriously rare!
But they're hardly falling off the trees, that's for sure!

Actually, that's probably not a bad thing - imagine the damage they'd do to your head if you were out for a nice stroll in the woods...

A friend of mine in Sydney, Dave Birchall runs a set on his Oval, and has a second set not fitted to a car - I've only seen about three other sets.

Serviceability more than anything, the set up works OK but if you need a part in a hurry like a single drum which then needs to be drilled it's not as straight forward as it could be. I did think about buying a complete spare set but if I was going to do that I figured I may as well update the entire system to stuff that is all available off the shelf. Still not sure about the swap but I have been swaying towards CSP, like I said I 'think' I'll change it but I'm not certain. No change in stud pattern.
