Love me some early 911's. Im talking 1973 or earlier here, ABSELUTELY NO BUMPER CARS!!  This is Jay Moore's 1972 911 RS "clone". Ive known him for about 10 years now, he owns Air Cooleds Only a couple doors down from me. He took two rusty and smashed basket cases of 1972 911's, lots of his time and money, and built this gem- hence the 911CS plate... Chicken Salad  It sports a MFI 2.7 upgraded to RS specs, and a custom Dynomax exhaust. Otherwise, the motor is fairly stock... but it sounds like pure sex. Ive never heard another street car that revved as hard of fast as this thing does. Imagine what a 6 cylinder superbike would sound like, and thats what this is. The car is a little on the light side (around 2100lb I think), but fully upohlstered, very liveable street car. And FAST. I usually hate BBS rims, but on this car they totally work. The gold and the green are beautiful. He had fuchs on it this morning, and it just didnt look right. He drives it occasionally, and takes it out to a few track days every year to flog it  Lets see some more! |

I would love to have an early 911. There is a yellow one with a 73 carrera style spoiler and front air dam thingy that's been sitting in front of a house down my block for a couple years. I keep thinking I should ask about it, but then I might have to buy it. |

How expensive is it to restore/rebuild one of these? I know they have rust issues. Just wondering about the engine. It seems a lot of people move from Hipo VWs to Porsches

How expensive is it to restore/rebuild one of these? I know they have rust issues. Just wondering about the engine. It seems a lot of people move from Hipo VWs to Porsches

Take everything that you know about the building costs involved with a high output VW aircooled engine. Now, triple those figures. I suck at math but I'm quite sure that my above stated formula still probably might end up a trifle shy. It's not cheap. But the end result is also many times more rewarding, if handling and going Mach tends to be your cup of tea.

One of my favorite T-Shirts has a drawing of a 911 and under it is says:
"The Porsche 911 divided everyone into two groups; those who could drive and everyone else."

Buy all the 911 you can afford, unless you are a diy type they can be expensive to repair, body and mechanical. A mid 80s 3.2 engine can last 250 miles+ before a rebuild. Once you master the rear weigh bias you can do magical things with a 911. Must post early photos with each reply... |
