I insert the wire from the top. I first form the end in the 180º hook to fit the hole in the trigger.
I assume you have a curved Hurst shifter. Bend the wire in a curve that is tighter than the bend of the shifter. The reason you must do this is to force the wire to find the hole at the rear of the shifter. If you don't, the wire will stay at the forward part of the ID of the main tube and never find the hole.
Bruce, I have done all this + a lot of fancy vocab, and it's a no go. I'm using an old throttle cable that measures .010 thicker then what came out of the shifter, would you think this could be holding me up?
