I insert the wire from the top.  I first form the end in the 180º hook to fit the hole in the trigger.

I assume you have a curved Hurst shifter.  Bend the wire in a curve that is tighter than the bend of the shifter.  The reason you must do this is to force the wire to find the hole at the rear of the shifter.  If you don't, the wire will stay at the forward part of the ID of the main tube and never find the hole.

Bruce, I have done all this + a lot of fancy vocab, and it's a no go. I'm using an old throttle cable that measures .010 thicker then what came out of the shifter, would you think this could be holding me up?

There's plenty of room for a larger wire, as long as it can go through the hole in the trigger.
Next try to insert the wire from the bottom.  It should be easy to push it through the passage in the bottom.  Once it is in the shaft of the shifter, you can bend the U turn at the top, then pull it down and hook it up at the bottom.

Anyone know where to find replacement cable for the lock out? It measures 1mm.

The wire Hurst used varied between 1.0 and 1.2mm
VW heater control wire is the right diameter.

Years ago I did an EMPI copy. Working at an old bike shop I used a Shimano S.I.S. gear cable made of piano wire. It worked perfectly. But those things haven`t been made in ages so it would probably be tough to find one.
