86mm crank, but which one?

Hello all

as a friend of mine wants to start building a 2387 T1 for hot street-eventual strip use, I thought to hear very carefully your suggestions on this point..which 86mm crank to use? Well for sure we can't afford for the best one, I know also that Scat would be an excellent choice for our engine but is a little bit to the expensive side, so what other choices we have? The engine is supposed to be to the 200Hp limit not exceding much the 7.000rpms, so we need a crank to be affordable but still on the safe side for our application, so for example could we trust a CB crank or not and if not what else, I really hope for your help on this..

as I remember I heard spmeware that 86 (type1 center not flanged) brakes... I don't know which make but its a fackt.

Crankshafts don't break- people break crankshafts.

That said, I've seen a dozen or so flanged cranks converted to two-piece cranks, yet I've seen a pump gas motor make over 220hp with a welded crank that had over a half dozen cracks in it- motor ran fine except when torn down the crank rang like a rock.  Come to think of it, I've never actually seen a broken welded vw crank...

As far as what's available today, the CB cranks are pretty nice, or you could always go with a welded german crank from your favorite shop- I'm a big fan of DPR myself.

thanks for the quick replies, actually I heard people saying that the CB 86mm breaks -broke were their words- (as Green Tom mentioned) but haven't seen or they showed to me one. This was the fact on which the thread begun, because CB is very affordable and I had heard those rumors, have you ever heared of that? And then what about bugpak, are they considered to be inferior or superior comparative to the CB ones? Just for reference, for my engine I have got an 86mm Scat flanged but for this one building now we can't afford it.

I'm going for a DPR although they haven't got back to me saying if they can do a type 4 main

Well nowaday it's hard to know the truth about crank...chinese or not?
I paid more than 1000$ to buy a old but new 86mm bugpack with T4 center main wedgemated (quite luky to find it )
Needless to say that the CB ones are very afforable but due to std T1 main perhaps they are softer to go higher than 7000rpm,but actually who know?
DPR or DMS make very good product with welded german crank (I ran a 84mm with chevy rod bearing size 4 years with no bad issue and it's still run in anoher engine!)
Hard choice for sure!!
