Car parts & Airlines

When I go out to Cali this summer I plan to pick up a few items for my two liter. I am thinking at least a crank & flywheel. If I can figure out how to stuff it in my bag I may bring my case and drop it off at Brother's machine as well. I guess this stuff would have to be in the stored luggage. Anyone tried flying with heavy car parts lately? Was it a major hassle to get it through the security checks? What did you do to keep it from becoming a piece of modern art during the trip?

Can you just box the case up in a box big enough and pack it with bubble pack? It's about 35lb I think...I just mailed a case to a freight forwarder. Of course, you'll need a dolly once you get to airport to roll stuff around. I think if you package the parts carefully enough with lots of packing and lots of strapping tape there will be no problems.

Yeah I am guessing the crank will be in a box anyway. I am still debating taking the engine. It would probably be worth it to ship it to Cali instead. Just trying to save a few bucks on shipping when I come out. Still kicking my itinerary around as well.

 The list of parts I used to carry includes engine case, merged exhaust system, camber compensator, super diff, rockers, pushrods, pistons and cylinders, steering wheel, cylinder heads, dropped spindles, distributors and so on.
I always had signs that my suitcases were opened for inspection but I never had any problem with it. I had a collection of "baggage checked by TSA" (or something like that) notices
They once asked me to explain what are the parts I had with me and the funny thing is that the lady couldn't understand a word, even if I was speaking English.

-"Errrr, eeee, OK" 
You have to be careful with packing, but I never had anything damaged, so it can be done.

hahaha John, that would go over GREAT....   pull out a lifter or something from your bag, while in the air, and say "I saw this fall off the plane when we were boarding..... is it important?"
