Hi,

I've tried this used Autometer 3905 tach recently (standard ignition, connected correct)
As you can see the pointer is a little bit nervous!?

Is the tach broken or what could be the problem, maybe anybody had this before?
Another tested Autometer tach worked perfect!

Is it set up for 4 cylinders ?

If you dont snip the wire loops at the back you can set a reading like that.

Sorry forgot which colours you need to snip but I can look tonight if you want, let me know

If you've determined that everything is wired correctly, the problem is most likely a bad tach.  Fortunately, Autometer has pretty good customer service. If you send it to them for repair, they usually get it back to you within three weeks or so and it usually costs around $40.00. How do I know this? For some reason, my Bug seems to kill a monster tach every couple of years. I've never been able to figure out why. I've replaced every wire that has anything to do with the tach at least twice and I've spent a lot of time on the phone with Autometer's tech support guys picking their brains as well. Good luck!

thx so far

tach is 4 cyl. calibrated as in the instruction!
tried both, 1 and 2 pulse (btw. what is the right pulse for flat 4?)

I think I should really contact the Autometer support...

Make sure the wire that goes back to the coil is nowhere near a spark plug lead, that will cause the tach to dance around like that.

Do you have a Compufire?.....If so, that may be the problem. The allen screw that holds the module to the dist. body is not tight. Take off the cap and rotor and snug that little guy up. That should do the trick.

I have read something about putting a diode in serial on the lead coming from the coil to smooth out the pulses?
Anyone heard if it?
