Ok, for years I have heard good and bad about Type 3 cylinder under tin sometimes referred to as 'cool tin'. Some people swear by it and some people swear at it saying it overheated their motor. Now, why would VW develop a special cylinder under tinware for the Type 3 if it did not work? Why would Brazilian Type 2s run it if it didn't work? VW must have done their homework, so what are your experiences with Type 3 cooling tin? Any pros and cons would be greatly appreciated. Run it or not - that's the real question!

All I recall is Dave Kawell telling me that when he worked as a (trained) mechanic in a VW dealership, he read a tech update from Volkswagen saying that the new under-cylinder tin was not to be used on Type 1 moors. It was solely for use on the pancake Type 3.

I don't if it's true, but I was told a long time ago that the type 3 cool tin was designed to work with the type 3 fan shroud on the front (back?) of the engine to help duct air all the way back to #'s 1 and 3 cylinders. It's not neccessary with type 1 shrouds as the fan is on top of the engine and is easier for it to distribute air to all 4 cylinders equally.

The type 3 cylinder deflector tins were designed for the type 3 pancake engine, and it was only used from the factory in '74 (maybe '73 too). If you choose not to use the "sled" tins that mounts near the 1 & 3 cylinders, and the opposing tins that mount near 2 & 4, then the type 3 tin is better than using the type 1 cylinder deflector tin by itself. My advise is to use ALL the correct German tins designed for the type one engine. It works.

Will you be pulling them off your motor Keith or leaving them in place when you drop the C.R. ?

I have had cool tin on my motor for the past 15yrs...I don't know if it runs cooler or hotter, but it has'nt been enough of a detriment to take it apart since March of 93.  Just to upset the apple cart.
