I took the motor out of my '63 for a good old clean up, its about 10years old, but thought whilst it is out I would go the whole way and strip the bottom end. To be honest I have never liked the FK-87 cam, I always found the engine to be all or nothing. When I originally built the motor I just wanted an animal, now I am getting older I want it a bit more streetable, for this reason I have decided to change the cam.

Spec of motor is:

82mm crank
5.5 rods
Jeff Denham 044 heads (44x37mm valves)
48IDAs

Do I go for an FK-10 or an alternative?

Whats do you guys reckon??

Also would I benefit from dropping to a 1 5/8" header?

By the way the car is a full weight street driven '63 bug.

I have a similar setup with the FK-8. Itīs like driving a hi-power turbo diesel engine. Up to 3500rpm, that is.  Grin

Not sure if you're still interested or have made a choice but I would shorten your rod length to Vw length or even better, 912 length. I would go with 1.75" header.

Also, which carburetors are you going to use?

40mm Webers: too small for this cylinder cc really to get hp, so very mild cam timing like no more than 250 deg @ .050
44mm Webers: something like Engle 125 or K8 or FK44 or 86B Web
48mm IDF or IDA: Engle 130, Web 86C or if car is light and has really close gears, FK87
I really enjoy my Pauter R6E8 in my 2165cc, 9.7:1, 48mm Webers, comes on just under 3000, really comes alive @ just under 5000
