Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining.

« on: May 16, 2008, 18:13:46 pm »

Who is the slowest? We will settle this once and for all. Firebird Raceway, Friday Night Drags, tonight.

The first and only time The Slingle Cab ran a few years ago, it was mostly stock, running 1600 single port fitted with an 010 and a Kadron header. Ran 22.9's all day long, and I swear I saw it burn flames onto the track just like the Delorean in Back To The Future. Except it ran out of asphalt before it made it to 88mph. Now it's sporting a Treuhaft equipped 1600cc, many suspension upgrades for improved aerodynamics, and a fancy new glass pack and Porsche 912 tach installed just yesterday. This time, expect time warpage.

The GTV on the other hand is still sporting its tried, true, and trusty 117k mile, original 1600 dual port.  At Phoenix BOR last year it ran back to back 20.32's- but it was still sucking through the stock Slo-ex carb, and exhaling out the blown and rusted original muffler. Now things have improved! A buttery smooth Zenith 32 NDIX carb has been installed for nearly twice as much venturi area, with phenolic spacer no less, as well as a header and a sweet sounding S&S glass pack muffler. A Pertronix ignition in the 010 brings it bang up to date. It is defintely going to be hard to steer when I get rubber in all 4 gears.

Place your bets gentlemen!

Adding a tach lowered my e.t. in the '67, so it might be a real race!  Or lunch break.

GTV if it were not for the engine it sure has better aerodynamics so it will be ahead at the end of the track

congratulations with the new single cab Zach  Grin Grin Grin

Results are in!

Race 1-  GTV wins! 19.79 to 19.96. But he has me by 4mph through the lights, I know if he gets a good launch Im going to be done for. For some reason I didnt pre-load and I had massive motor hop! The velocity stack actually banged itself into the decklid, flattening the lip out quite nicely! Cheesy

Race 2-  Slingle wins! 19.91 to 20.18. This time I pre-load, but leave at too low RPM. The Slingle is making headway...

Race 3-  GTV wins! 19.68 to 19.86. Now we were thinking it was going to be close, but we had no idea it was going to be this close. I cut an .023 light, I am proud of this.

Race 4-  Slingle wins! 19.22 to nothing. I cut a red light, and the stupid S hook on the throttle cable pops off of the pedal as I bang second gear. This pisses me off because it was my fastest 60 foot. I limp it down the track. Slinger got the launch down and knocked .6 off of his previous best!

Race 5-  Slingle wins! 19.31 to 19.84. He clearly has me beat on hp.

Race 6-  Slingle wins! But we dont know what the time was because the tower fucked up somehow! Angry It felt pretty strong on my end (relatively speaking!).

And that is that. I wanted another run since we didnt get our last time slips, but I decided I had punished my car enough. Running 66mph through the traps in 3rd gear on an original motor can not be good for too long. It was fun, and I cant wait until I rebuild the top end and give it another go next spring. On a side note, we were the only VW's there last night, and we did not represent well. We were the 2 slowest cars there! Cheesy

Yessir. The plan this winter is to exchange the worn out 85.5's for a set of forged 87's, cut down the cylinders for .040" deck (brings the CR up from 7.3 to 7.9), and add a pair of EMPI 1.4 rockers for a .120" increase in valve lift. Also I am contemplating boring out the Zenith to 36mm's and installing 28mm vents!! Cheesy
