July Hot Rod

The latest issue of Hot Rod came in the mail yesterday.  Along with this years Ridler Award winner (the holy grail of awards for hot rodding) won by a Ferrari V8 mid-engined powered 1960 Rambler American wagon is a feature on the VW Rat Rod of Franz Muhr / John Dixon!  I know it's not Cal-Look, but still nice to see "something" VW in a magazine dominated by American water pumpers.

A few years ago one of the hot rod mags had a concept drawing of a mid engined 27 t bucket that was built with a unibody structure. (tubular front and rear sub-frames mounted to a central aluminum tub.) That has always stuck with me. (Hang on I am getting to the VW content) I have lately been thinking about a more traditional tube frame chasis based 27 t with a mid mounted VW engine. All aluminum body with a track style nose. Some Halibrand Kidney Bean style wheels. Sort of a dry lakes or early Indy car feel. 48's with the velocity stacks stick up through holes right behind the passenger's compartment. One day.

Wow, that is some nice work. Would have almost been easier to start from scratch though. And I agree, that wagon does resemble a squareback.

Nice link, Chuck...I like the rear shock absorber treatment!  After having two mid-engine sandrails, the thought of building a like car with a Fiat Tupolino body for the street has been in the back of my head for a while.  A good excuse to put those Halibrand spindle mounts under the workbench to good use  .  Here's the interior of the Rambler...SICK!!

Sarge, wasn't it you who mentioned you liked Willys? Check out this guys work. He rebuilds them for a living. All work is done by hand.

Yeah, it was me allright.  I seem to have a lot of car projects I would like to do...especially after reading Rodder's Journal !  I'll always be a VW guy, though.  Anything else just wouldn't seem right.  That Willys looks like a ton of work!

Oh Sarge, you'll beat me to it - I really fancy a fuel altered style Topolino with a big flat four in the front, IDAs or Hilborn injection sticking up either side of the body!

There was a feature in a mag in the 90s of a Rampler Wagoon, build by Troy Trepanier...almost same look like this one. Baskerville of Hot Rod Magazine described it as ,, California - Look - Stylebuild ,, Hot Rod.

Now ...i agree. Cal - look can  be used on all makes and years of cars & bikes......because it describes a style, to build a vehicle.

Anyways.........the ,, Ferrambo ,, is worth called...........BEST HOT ROD OF THE YEAR !

yes the wagon looks very cool, it has a Kid Dean feeling to it. especially in the sidevieuw with the pillars like that.

Tom, you hit the nail square on the head about building a Cal Look into any car...remove excess crap, install big horsepower, add tastefull paint and interior..BAM!!
