Back In The 70's most of the Cal Looks either pulled the Leafs out of the Front End Or Put A Select A Drop On, the Select a Drop You Could Crank Down To Get The Height you wanted But It road Terrible, you cut the top tube of the beam and welded the kit on what made it ride so hard was the lower you went the more preload you had on the bottom leafs. I used to cut the bottom tube rotate it 1/2 inch then weld it back, then added a select a drop. a Stock 67 Bug is 24 inches from the center of the headlight to the Ground My 67 Convert was Was 16 inches from center of the Headlight to the Ground that is also The Way the CHP always measured them I Had Lots of Tickets Back Then, I used to get them so Often, I Used to just jack up my car with a floor jack and I would Put a U shaped Muffler clamp around the front Shock so it would not close Drive Down to the CHP office get the Ticket Signed Off come home and Take the Clamps Off And I Was Good To Go!! till The next Time.. There are alot better ways to lower the cars today and maintain a good ride But When I Worked at Auto Haus We Sold The Heck Out of the Select a Drops    Not Many 70's Cal Looks Were De Cambered most were stock height in the rear dropped front  LETS SEE YOUR LOW RIDES!!

Mine was lowered by pulling all the splits bars and one large bar out of each tube and it was decambered as well. Headlights sat at 16 inches to the center and back was lowered about 3 inches.

I too had a glove box full of fix it tickets from CHP and local PDs for being too low. I had a set of stock length shocks with overload coil springs that I would swap out for the short shocks and that brought the headlights back up to legal height. I used to be able to install the shocks, go down to the Tustin PD, get the ticket signed off, go back home and swap the short shocks back in about 30-40 minutes.

Here's a pic with the overloads on

LOL...

Well, at that time, I actually lived in an unincorporated area of OC so our mailing address was Santa Ana!

And I used to work at the BAP/Geon on Main St. in Santa Ana... can't get more Hispanic than that. Wink

I remember your small window, Gary. It was a nice ride. A buddy was doing a 57 about the same time and we kept looking at your car for ideas. Sadly, he totaled it before we got to far along with it.

here's my '67, not really dumped, don't like the steering geometry when you crank 'em way down. Mine has a pair of Sway a Way adjusters.

Frank Lux.....LOVE your car.....looks JUST RIGHT!

Thanxs Jim, I like yours aswell!!! Wink Grin Grin Grin

Shubee2, that oval looks great.  Great inspiration for my Horizon Blue '57 sunroof.  I even have 3 flat-6 Fuchs that are intended for it.  Just need one more.

In 1979, we had Mesa Sandrail on Broadway Road cut and turn the beam 3/8ths of an inch in my 2 owner '66.  Rode llike hell.  This is back in the day before dropped spindles.  We used Opel GT shocks for lowered beams.  My 67 sits as low, but rides so much better.
