Whats the real deal with aftermarket 36 hp dog house shrouds? We know the Scat offering fits decent and is reported to work pretty well.
But then Bugpack lists a 36r, and CB Perf. and other vendors list them for sale.
Are the Scats different than others? Hard to imagine there are that many different ones being produced, but ya never know. My point is, Im shopping now, and knowing is half the battle.

I ran a Scat on my S/F engine, becuase the VW one would not clear carburetors. I had no issues with fins falling out, like you may have heard about. The fit was good. Only problem was the Berg linkage brace. I got rid of it in favor of the VW shroud though since I went back to VW cylinder heads and Skat trak style IDA manifolds. BTW I ran some no name 36hp style on my old 2054 in 1990, and that was the coolest running engine in my car, ever. I'm not saying any more about that!

Thanks for the input guys. I hate working on my Kads with a VW d/h shroud, I can't imagine when there's a real set of carbs in there. Gotta have that extra room.
Now I just have to figure out where to get a Scat job. Haven't seen any of the sites with shrouds actually list them as such.

You could always go with an early (round top with indentation) 40hp shroud if you added an external oil cooler. I have a 356 Porsche cooler under mine and it gets the job done pretty good without an extra cooler (though I'd like the extra in the summer months). If you go the Porsche cooler route, you will have to do some mock-ups with clay and a little light bashing inside the shroud to get the fit, but it's worth it. Just another idea to consider.

That's an interesting idea, Sarge. I'll keep it in mind.
What's up with the 356 cooler? I think I just saw someone else talking about using one. Are they alloy, or...? I'm definetly going to include an external cooler as well.

The 356 Porsche cooler has a lot more cooling fins then the stock, early style VW cooler and uses 8mm studs to hold it down. The main drawback is that they're rather expensive and hard to find these days. I guess I'm just Old School...I've never had a dog-house on any of my stuff.

Anybody can tell me who sells the Scat product? Been searching and seriously can't find one. If Scat's site lists dealers, they've hidden it very well because I can't find it!
Sorry to be a pest, but...

Yeah, that sounds like a 356 / 912 shroud. You'd have to do some serious customizing to get that to work. The shroud I'm talking about came on a 40 hp bus from around 1962 or so...it is round like a 36 hp shroud but has the square indentation at the top.

Its an early 40 HP Stale Air Shroud it came on Type 1's to see picture below of my Motor it has the stale air 40 HP fan housing the difference between this shroud and the 36 HP is the indention at the top and it is indented at the bottom to fit a 40 HP and newer case the Original 36 HP shroud has to be notched out at the bottom to fit the case

I bought my 36hp dog house shroud from CB. I'm pretty sure it's a Scat unit.

Hi,
To me they are all produced in the same factory. I bought a CB first and noticed that the holes for the generator were drilled wrong(and thats a problem when you have a berg carb commando), I than bougth a scat and it had the same problem, so I modified it.
Regards,
Philip

Thanks for the info. I will also be running Berg linkage, so I know I have to "corrective" work to do before it receives final finishing.

There are DEFINITELY more than one manufacturer. Iīd say at least 3. Scatīs and CSPīs being the best. STAY AWAY from the models and cool tin for that matter that JP group distributes. Absoulute disaster IMO. T

Good to know, because here where we live in Croatia all parts that are not genuine, come from JP group, and their performance parts suck. This is why we have to order everything overseas.
